Junior training

There are the following types of training for juniors:
  • 5-day course in Optimists during late July or early August with RYA-approved instructors (see Optimist Week details below)
  • Saturday afternoon Optimist races mostly at 2.30 pm (see Munro Quaich races on programme ), with pre-race mini training sessions throughout most of the season

  • occasional extra events, such as the CSC Optimist Championship
  • youth training for older juniors is provided with adult training other Saturdays (see right-hand column).

Optimist Week

The summer Optimist course caters for both beginners and more experienced juniors. Many of the participants camp for the 5 days at the club in tents, or in caravans if their parents have them on the site. RYA certificates are awarded to participants according to the level of competence they have reached. This course has become increasingly popular over the years and is now only open to Cam Sailing Club members and acceptance is on a first-come-first-served basis.

Pre-season youth training

All junior members are welcome on Sat, 9 April, 2.30 pm.

Racing rules game

Improve your knowledge of the racing rules while playing a quiz-based game. Different levels of the game cater for those starting to race as well as those wanting to understand how the rules may be applied in much more complex situations.

Youth and adult training course

CSC general coaching sessions on Saturdays

The course comprises five sessions, from 9.30 am to 1.30 pm on each of five Saturdays. The dates for 2011 are:

  • 2 April
  • 9 April
  • 23 April
  • 7 May
  • 14 May.

The course may lead to RYA Level 1 or 2 being awarded. Places are limited to 8 CSC members - see programme card or clubhouse noticeboard for booking details. The club will charge £60 for the whole course.

Formal courses at other centres

More formal training leads to adult RYA dinghy sailing certificates (Levels 1 and 2 and, replacing the old levels 3-5, courses such as, Dinghy Start Racing, Dinghy Sailing with Spinnakers, Dinghy Day Sailing, and Dinghy Seamanship Skills). Two Cambridgeshire centres offer such courses:

These centres cater for children as well.

'Bring your questions' evenings

If there's demand for it, we'll hold one or two evenings in the clubhouse to answer questions on any topics that members want to raise about sailing or about the club, such as difficulties of sailing on the river or how the CSC ticks. These evenings may be particularly useful to new members, but could help any member maximize the benefit of their membership. If you have questions for such an evening or are just interested in attending please contact the Hon Sailing Sec.

Dates for the CSC training sessions are given in this year's programme:
