CSC's team wins Cambs Youth Sailing League

Congratulations to the CSC juniors who won the1996 team prize for the Cambs Youth Sailing League. A total of 45 boats from the 4 participating clubs took part in at least one of the events.

How the league is organized

Rather than having exclusive club teams, all club members under 18 years can take part on an individual basis, with prizes for different age groups at each event, held one at each club.

The three best placed boats also win points for their club towards an overall trophy. The sailing clubs participating are Paxton Lakes, Ely, Hunts and Cam.

The league events provide youngsters, some as young as eight, with a bridge between racing among friends at their own club and taking part in serious open and national events.

It has been the first year of the league, orignially thought up by Bob Leonard of Paxton Lakes Sailing Club, but the result of hard work by people in all 4 clubs.. The league is proving so successful it's sure to continue in future years.

Report on the final event

The final event was at Paxton Lakes.

Although the winners at Paxton were CSC sailors William Winter and Rachel Cole in a Mirror, they were just beaten into second place for all the league events combined by 17-year-old Andrew Kerr of HSC.

Andrew attends Hills Road Sixth Form College. and sails a Laser, the class in which Ben Ainsley won a silver for Britain at this year's Olympics. Keep at it Andrew!

Third individual placing overall went to Lee Gilbey and Jonathan Garfitt of ESC in a Mirror and fourth to Jonathan Cole of the CSC in a Laser. Jonathan Cole, also from Hills Road Sixth Form College, is the 17-year-old captain for the winning club, the CSC.

The main contributors to the Cam team's success were William Winter and Rachel Cole. William is 15 and attends Parkside Community College and Rachel, aged 14, is at Chesterton Community College. See next column.

Another CSC success

William and Rachel make a formidable pair having already won a major adult open series this year, the Mirror Eastern Area Traveller's Trophy, a series in which 126 different boats took part.

Newsflash! William and Rachel invited to apply for World Championships.

Rachel's parents, Lorna and Charles, the Commodore, have mainly been responsible for building up youth sailing at the CSC, over a period of some 10 years, with a good programme of training and racing. Their summer holiday course is always over-subscribed.
