1999 - an excellent centenary year!

All the events to celebrate the club's centenary went off very successfully, and we were lucky with the weather, which was fine for the outdoor events at the club. Our successes early in the year, were a good omen for the whole year, crowned by our junior members winning the Cambs Youth Sailing League for the third time in the four years of its existence!

The Commodore, Charles Cole, summed up the year as follows:

'"Founded 1899" appears in very small print on the front cover of the Cam Sailing Club's rule book, but probably very few members even notice it. It has made 1999 a very special year.

'The centenary celebrations started in March with the Spring Get-together 100 years of Sailing on the Cam. A dramatised account of the history of the club from 1899 to 1999, which was written produced and directed by Rodney and Marion Bryant, with additional poem and song by John Harris and the Cam Sailing Club Ensemble.

'Our Reaffirmation Evening on the 25th May, the exact anniversary of the club's founding, allowed members to reaffirm their commitment to the club and also to the original aims of our founder members, which is still stated on the first page of the rule book, "The object of the club shall be to encourage the building, improvement and sailing of small boats."

'In July we held our Centenary Celebration Weekend on the club grounds. On Saturday, the Sail Past of 107 boats was followed by a social evening with hog roast and a jazz band. On Sunday, the Centenary Trophy and Regatta attracted an exceptional entry with both past and present members taking part. A good day's sailing was had by all, in spite of a fishing match being in progress at the same time.

'The year's celebrations were rounded off with the Grand Centenary Ball and Prize Giving, held on the 17th December at Chilford Hall, a fitting way to finish a very enjoyable and memorable year.'
