CSC juniors take CYSL Trophy in style for 2000, making it 4 years out of 5

CSC junior members took the Cambs Youth Sailing League for the year 2000, making it four wins in five years and, as last year, the win was by a very large margin. This time the CSC had the winners of all three age groups and second place in two of them. The team comprised:
  • Chris Baumbach (Team Captain) (Laser Radial)
  • Gus Brown (Laser Radial)
  • Ian Martin (Laser)
  • Edward Lachlan-Cope & Simon Martin (Mirror)
  • Dale Winter & Andrew Davies (Mirror)
  • Chris Covey (Topper)
  • Lawrence Mansfield (Topper)
  • Karl Baumbach (Optimist)
  • Helen Howett (Optimist)
  • Neil Howett (Optimist)
  • Oliver Tweddell (Optimist)

Overall (under 19): Dale & Andrew top the league

Dale Winter and Andrew Davies had a very successful year of Mirror racing, including taking top overall place in the CYSL. Their other successes will be noted elsewhere, when I get the info. They had support in depth from two Laser Radial sailors, Chris Baumbach who was 4th overall and Gus Brown who was 5th=.

Amazingly in an under-19 group, Oliver Tweddell, aged just 9 years was also 5= out of a field of 28 competitors! There's more about Oliver in the under 12 group (see right-hand column).

Under 15s: CSC takes 1st & 2nd!

The middle age group was under 15 this year instead of under 16 and the CSC team had success with Lawrence Mansfield taking 1st place in his Topper, and Edward Lachlan-Cope & Simon Martin taking 2nd in their Mirror.

Lawrence's achievement in the CYSL and elsewhere was recognized by the Cambridge Evening News, which chose him as their Young Sports Star of the Month in their page of 'Achievers honoured' (13 December 2000, page 32).

Under 12s: CSC takes 1st & 2nd!

The youngest group was under 12 this year instead of under 13. As in the under 16s, CSC team took 1st with Oliver Tweddell and 2nd with Neil Howett, both in Optimists.

Oliver also had successes in a number of Optimist open meetings, including three that the RYA used as indicator meetings to choose promising young sailors to join the RYA Eastern Zone Talent Squad (Optimists). This involves top level training with the hope of getting into the National Squad.
