Commodore and Hon Sec stand down at AGM

At the AGM on 8 December 2000, Charles Cole stood down after four very successful years as Commodore and Ken Lumbard stood down as Hon Sec after 17 years in this role and some 22 years on the committee.

John Harris, the previous Vice-commodore was elected Commodore and Margaret Staples as Hon Sec. Newly elected to the main committee were Greg Ellwood, Jeff Kinna and Henry Bird.

Having been elected Commodore John Harris addressed the club:

"Before moving on with the elections, I'd like to thank you for electing me and to say how pleased and honoured I feel to be elected Commodore of the Cam Sailing Club.

"It's not just that it's a club with a 101-year history, but also because it's an active and successful club; it's a friendly club, and of course it's you, the membership, that makes a club what it is.

"I've served on the main committee under the last three Commodores. They're a hard act to follow. They've led the club and its committees very successfully, and I think you'd all agree that the club has gone from strength to strength. Of course they haven't done it alone and I've seen the support they've had from the other officers, (the people mainly still sitting up here on the platform), the main committee and the subcommittees.

"I'm sure I shall receive the similar support. I hope the club will continue to be as successful while I am Commodore and afterwards for at least another 101 years."

Later the new Commodore paid tribute to the retiring Commodore and Hon Secretary.
