Members' Email Newsletter No 6, October 2002
Members can now receive information, such as the newsletter below, by email. The newsletters appear here on the website about one month later. The email versions of newsletters may contain extra information that's for members only.
To receive the email version, send a two-word email ("subscribe camsail") to the mailing list. I can't give the mailing list address to send it to here or the address will be picked up by the computers that trawl the web looking for email addresses as targets for junk emails. The email address is given on a board in the clubhouse and was circulated in the CSC News circulated by snail mail with this year's membership fee bill.

2 Dale Winter repeats success in CSC Mirror Open
------------------------------------------------
Only two visitors came to the Mirror Open this year, but a strong
local showing meant the event was its usual success. With 8 boats
taking part, there were two starts scored separately, and in the last
race the four top crews so far were pitched against each other in our
start to ensure there wasn't a draw.
Dale Winter and Tim Lachlan-Cope won their first two races and in the
last race were pitted against the other strongest crews. This proved
no problem and they won for the third time, and by a very comfortable
margin.
1 Dale Winter and Tim Lachlan-Cope (CSC)
2 Ray Smith and Sarah Glanville (Dabchicks SC)
3 Ed Lachlan-Cope and Simon Martin (CSC)
4 Neil Cooke and Henry Cooke (Tewksbury SC)
3 Dale Winter wins Eastern Area Travellers' Trophy
--------------------------------------------------
Dale Winter won the Mirror Class Eastern Area Travellers' Trophy
again this year, sailing in 5 of the 6 events. He clocked up 2 wins
and 3 seconds with four different crews, Jo Osborn, Peter Houlder,
Simon Martin, and Emma Houlder.
Other Cam SC sailors did well too, with Alan Winter, crewed on
different occasions by John Houlder and Steve Osborn coming 2nd, Ed
Lachlan-Cope and Simon Martin coming 3rd and Tom Lachlan-Cope on
different occasions Steve Osborn and Tim Lachlan-Cope 4th.
4 Oliver Tweddell's wins at both Cotswold & Weston SCs Byte events!
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Report from 'Yachts and Yachting' on Cotswold SC:
"A fine predominantly sunny day wind force 3-4 on September 7 saw the
seventh open meeting in the RWO Byte travellers series take place at
Cotswold SC.
"The first race saw close racing at the front of the fleet with
Heather Jones working hard to establish a lead over 11yr old Oliver
Tweddell only to retire due to equipment failure leaving Oliver
Tweddell to win Ian Ayres second and Paul Tweddell third.
"Heather Jones after gifting the first race to Oliver Tweddell was
out to make amends and rounded the windward mark first from Oliver
Tweddell second and Ian Ayres third and that's the way it stayed.
"With all to play for in the final race between the top three the
youngster Oliver Tweddell produced a mature performance to win
convincingly from Ian Ayres second and Heather Jones third.
"This leaves Oliver Tweddell leading the travellers series after
seven meetings and in a strong position with two remaining."
Overall Results:
1 Oliver Tweddell Cam SC
2 Heather Jones Kingsmead SC
Report from 'Yachts and Yachting' on Weston SC:
"Weston SC hosted the penultimate Byte Open in the RWO National
Travellers series on Saturday, September 21st, which was dry and
sunny, Force 2-3.
"The first race saw Ian Ayres take a port end flyer, to take the lead
up the first beat. 11 year old Oliver Tweddell was hot on his heels
with Maggie Futcher in third. At the leeward mark, Ian Ayres stood on
and Oliver Tweddell tacked off and took the lead and held it for the
rest of the race.
"In the second race, the first beat was a close affair, with Oliver
Tweddell leading Maggie Futcher, Ian Ayres and Jackie Ward fighting
for second around the mark. It ended up Maggie Futcher and Jackie
Ward and Ian Ayres, who then dropped out of contention. Oliver
Tweddell and Maggie Futcher battled out the rest of the race, with
Oliver Tweddell coming out on top.
"In the third race, Oliver Tweddell took a port end flyer at the
start and got to the front of the fleet and put a lot of water
between himself and second placed Maggie Futcher to win. This secured
the meet and First place in an unassailable position in the RWO
National Travellers series."
Overall Results:
1 Oliver Tweddell Cam SC
2 Maggie Futcher Weston SC
5 Neil Howett wins Optimist Open
--------------------------------
Perhaps it's the awesome reputation of the Cam SC juniors (see
above!) that kept the visitors at bay and prevented them entering our
Optimist Open! However, lack of visitors didn't stop some good
racing, though lack of wind nearly did! Maybe that's what kept the
visitors away! Anyway, Neil Howett showed his great experience by
getting the most out of his Optimist, even in light winds. Well done
Neil and all the competitors, for sailing in what were often
difficult and trying conditions! The results were as follows:
1 - Neil Howett Gold fleet 1
2 - John Houlder Gold Fleet 2
3 - Joanne Osborn Gold Fleet 3
4 - Helen Howett Silver Fleet 1
5 - Steven Osborn Silver Fleet 2
6 - Gabriel Clark Silver Fleet 3
7 - Emma Houlder
8 - James Steckelmacher
6 If you use a PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) ...or a diary!
--------------------------------------------------------------
Henry Bird has found it useful to download the year's programme on to
his PDA. He then always has the programme with him, or at least
whenever he has his PDA with him, which is presumably a lot or it
wouldn't be very useful!
For those of us still using a diary or wallet, the nearest equivalent
is to print out the programme from the website on to paper, which is
easier to fold into your diary or wallet than the programme card you
get at the start of the year!
Of course, it's also useful should that valuable card be lost,
spirited away by another member of the family, or having been stuffed
into your back pocket when you capsized and so no longer of practical
use.
You can find the web version of the programme at:
http://www.cam.net.uk/home/sail/prog02.html
Remember, however, that if I make a mistake and the card and website
versions differ, the card is the definitive version! I'm not aware
that has happened since I first put the programme on the web in 1998.
7 Step up to the repaired sail shed and light up the racks!
-----------------------------------------------------------
We now have new metal steps in place to get into the extensively
repaired sail shed. There are lights inside, so you can see what
you're doing! Please don't forget to turn them off when you leave!
On the right-hand side there are excellent new racks for Laser and
Topper sails and masts. These are now ready for use and, once
there's a padlock on the doors, which will be soon, Laser and Topper
sailors can move their sails and masts there. On the left are racks
that still have to be adapted for Optimist sails. Down the middle,
there are to be racks for winter storage of boats.
8 The best of news gets members running!
----------------------------------------
Many members will have previously seen Marj Winter bravely struggling
to keep active against progressive paralysis, and some will also have
known about 11-year-old Elizabeth Davies's long series of treatments;
surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy in treatment for a brain
tumour.
Well there's good news on both accounts! ...And a number of members
will be running in celebration on the 20th October. You may spot
them afterwards tired but elated, together with a few equally tired
and elated visitors, coming back to the clubhouse for a well-deserved
(and probably needed!) shower.
I'll leave Marj to tell you why and let you know what you can do to
help! As attachments don't seem to work with this mailing list, I've
simply appended Marj's piece to the end of this newsletter. She'd be
delighted if you read it! If you'd like to support her, please fill
in the sponsorship form that's in the clubhouse.
9 Club series results: Paget cup
--------------------------------
We decided that when a series of club races ends, the results should
be put in the next club e-newsletter. One series was completed
during September, the Paget cup, three races sailed on 15 September.
Dave Parker won it, with Brian and Ann Bonfield second.
10 Lost property
----------------
There's a lot of lost property, left in the changing rooms and
elsewhere in the clubhouse. It consists mainly of clothes, but there
are other items such as an unmarked boat undercover. Please make
sure you have looked through the boxes and removed any property that
belongs to you before we tidy up at the end of the season on 10
November.
11 In memoriam
--------------
Members who haven't already heard will be sad to hear that Sheena
Hall finally lost her brave struggle against cancer on 8 September
and we also recently heard of the death of honorary life member and
respected Merlin Rocket sailor Lou Oliver at the age of 89, who sadly
had been suffering ill health for some time.
In earlier newsletters I failed to mention the very sad deaths of
members David Cox, co-owner of the Etap 20, in a tragic accident at
home and of Dick Arbery, who died on 29th June this year.

John Harris
Commodore
Elizabeth Davies Thanks! CLIC fund
Eighteen months of surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy to combat a
brain tumour is a bit of a marathon slog! The struggle has been made
a bit easier for eleven-year-old Elizabeth Davies and her family by
the efforts of so many people at Addenbrooke's working in the
children's ward. Now at the end of this siege, it is a time for
celebration and saying thanks.
During this period and before, I had had my own struggles, against an
unidentified slowly progressive paralysis, which eventually left me
for eighteen months unable to get about without the use of sticks.
Six months ago, after drastic changes to diet, my condition improved
substantially: I could walk again, even, joy of joys, run again. I
proposed to Elizabeth then that when she finished her chemo, and when
I could reasonably hope to do so, I would run a half marathon for the
charity of her choice. I can think of no better way of celebrating
my recovery, wishing her the very best in her continuing recovery,
and saying thank-you to those who have made a hard road a little
easier.
She has chosen CLIC (Cancer & Leukaemia in Childhood), which has
supplied specialist nurses at Addenbrookes who have provided immense
support. The Royal Engineers Half Marathon at Waterbeach on the
20th October, has been settled on for my half marathon debut. In
that effort I will be joined by various family and friends, including
Elizabeth's father Richard, himself a cancer survivor.
We would like to invite you all to share in the celebrations in any
way you can: join us running, getting sponsors, sponsoring us, or
simply coming and cheering on the day.
