Site Construction & Management |
This page gives information about the construction and maintenance of the Cam Sailing Club's website:
At their meeting in November 1996, the CSC committee accepted John Harris's suggestion to produce a website to be hosted on CamNet, the Cambridge Community Network. At the AGM on 6 December John Harris showed the draft site to the members attending the meeting. Shortly afterwards, after some minor changes, the site went live.
The main structure of the site has remained the same throughout. The original remaining structure consists of:
Various extra elements have been added to the blue information pages, such as:
The home page acts as a pointer to the information available on the site. As additional pages have been added to the site, the number of links from the home page has has gone up. So the home page has grown beyond its original size, and most people will now have to scroll down a little to see the last items. However, the page's structure makes clear the need to scroll, so this isn't a major problem.
For more information about navigating the site and the background colours used, see the page on navigation.
All the pages have been produced on an Apple Mac. The original pages were produced with the SimpleText application (a simple text editor) and the later ones with Microsoft Word. Although I have access to PageMill 2, I found that it was incompatible with the HTML I had written previously, so I continue to use Word.
CamNet is a community enterprise and is mostly financed by sponsors. The original idea was to make it free to anyone in the Cambridge area after a small admin fee to cover the cost of setting up an account (£20). There was no monthly, annual or usage fee. As the sponsorship did not quite cover the costs, they had to start charging an annual fee of £20. During 1999 CamNet had to change the organization hosting it and when it finally moved all charges were dropped. Anyone can join, adults, children, businesses, charities, societies, local government and so on. If you're interested, you can contact them:
