Chess

Sidle up to the Chess Server, enter your name and level of play, and wait till you match up with another visitor to compete with. (On our last visit this only took a few minutes; your results may vary). The graphics are vintage cheesy chess, but you can choose text-only to speed things a bit. Otherwise, play moves at a glacial pace -- which you may or may not find frustrating. you can watch other matches in progress or view pix of the ex-girlfriends of Tyler Jones, the site creator.

Play by mail games
There are two games
This is a travel game
What does Play-By-Electronic-Mail (PBEM) mean?

Let's start by taking the electronic out of the above catchy phrase and simply define Play-By-Mail (PBM) games. Imagine you and a friend live in distant locales but have a particular affinity for chess or checkers or some other such game. Instead of traveling to a common location to play your game, you simply indicate your move on a piece of paper and then mail the results to your friend. Upon delivery, your friend performs a counter-move and sends the results back to you. This is the general concept behind PBM games.

Play-By-Electronic-Mail (PBEM) games make use of the same idea

but transfer the communications medium from postal mail to electronic mail. This has a number of advantages over postal mail including faster turnaround and more accurate processing.

The above example of a chess game is simple enough that you and a friend would not need any help from an intermediary to carry on such a game. What we offer above the simple model is a much higher level of complexity and interaction. PBEM games provide opportunities for tens to hundreds of players to compete and conspire in richly detailed worlds. Automating the moderation tasks associated with such a game not only makes such an endeavor possible, it allows to significantly decrease the required processing time. This makes it possible to offer turnaround times as quickly as once per day versus a bi-weekly schedule to which you would be restricted with traditional hand-moderated play-by-postal-mail games.

PBEM enhances your game playing experience by providing prompt and accurate turn results, providing a constant nationwide or worldwide pool of new and crafty human opponents to compete against, and offering an evolving variety of exciting game modules and game types in which to participate. Also, since our games are turn-based and not real-time based, you do not have to pay huge fees for on-line service connect time.

Authentication

The email addresses and the password that you supply with your account set up are used to authenticate email transactions between you and Gamer's Den. We will only accept game emailers such as signups, turns, and drops, and follow up account emailers including changes of address and balance queries, that list your password and are sent from one of your registered email addresses. All Gamer's Den email, including turn results, will be sent only to your delivery email address. Queries to obtain readme files like this one do not require a Gamer's Den account and no authentication is performed.

Your choice of password should be about eight characters, certainly not less than seven. We suggest you include a few capital letters or punctuation marks too. Also, we suggest your password is not a name or something you would find in a dictionary.

Should you need to temporarily or permanently change your delivery email address, please use the 'address' command. Details for this command can be found in any of the game specific 'readme' files.
