We are pleased to announce that Host Names are now fully operational. Every dialled-up computer (host) has a unique name, which looks like abc123.home.cam.net.uk with your own account ID in place of abc123.
You can change the first part of your Host Name to make it more memorable, if you have not already done so. Your Host Name doesn't have to be the same as your Mail or Web Alias, but you might like to keep them the same for consistency. Changes become visible within a few hours.
What can you do with a Host Name? Well, it allows you to run
servers like IRC (or even a web server), and other CamNet users
will be able to find you while you are online without knowing your IP
address. (Don't blame us if you run up a huge phone bill, though!)
Note: your Host Name is not visible outside of CamNet, since
direct external connections are not possible.
What else does it mean? It will allow our FTP server to greet you more pleasantly (try it now!). It also makes life easier for mail programs, although that probably won't affect you noticeably.
Don't forget, your TCP/IP settings for DNS name server should be "automatic" if possible, or if you don't have an automatic option you should be using 194.217.249.13. Any other server will not give you the benefit of Host Names. Also please note that whatever Host Name or Aliases you choose, you must still use your account ID (like abc123) when connecting to CamNet or any CamNet services.
- The CamNet Technical Team
The CamNet Online Directory
The CamNet Online Directory is an important part of the CamNet service that
will allow users and their web pages to be quickly located by anyone visiting
the CamNet site. Unfortunately the design of the COD could not be undertaken
until the structure of the rest of the system had been finalised and tested
with some real users.
We are now starting the design process for a fully automatic online directory system, but it has become clear that it may take several months for this to become fully operational. It has been therefore been decided that an interim solution is necessary. The technical support team will manually compile a list giving e-mail addresses and homepages of CamNet customers.
The current standard form of the COD is as follows:
Title
(The name by which the directory will be sorted, sort is by surname if the
title is the name of a person.)
The address and web URL will be hotlinks pointing to the appropriate accounts. It is possible to make the link text (displayed on the screen) different to the actual link itself. This might be useful if you want to give your homepage a snappy title rather than a sprawling URL, but it makes it slightly harder for people to write down the address.
We intend for the automatic COD to include the weekly total of the number of accesses each home page receives. The design specification is not finalised, however and if there's something you'd like to see in the COD that we haven't thought of, write to support and it will be passed on to the design team.
Equally if there's something you wouldn't like displayed in the COD (but you would still like to have some entry), now would be a good time to mention it so the design can be changed.
Obviously as the interim COD is written by hand, variations on the standard form are possible (and encouraged by the compiler).
I intend to make an announcement when the design stage of the COD is finished so that everyone will be clear about what ticking the 'Can we include contact details in the CamNet Online Directory?' box means before the system goes live.
Submit your COD entry request now.
