Connecting to CamNet from Windows 95

From http://www.cam.net.uk/manuals/win95faq/win95.htm

Introduction

This document gives step by step instructions for connecting to CamNet from a PC running the Microsoft Windows 95 operating system. Please read the entire document before starting.

You may need to have your Windows 95 installation disks or CD available, and you should follow any directions to copy programs from the disks and/or restart your computer. You will also need your CamNet user ID and password which can be found on your welcome letter.

You should have a modem either installed inside your PC or connected externally to a spare serial port. Windows 95 will normally auto-detect your modem and install it for you - consult the modem manufacturer's documentation for more details.

If your computer is connected to a company or academic network, please consult your network manager before continuing.

Setting up Dial-Up Networking

Check to see if you have Dial-Up Networking installed. You can do this by double clicking on the "My Computer" icon on the desktop. If Dial-Up Networking is installed you will see a folder "Dial-Up Networking".

If you do not have a Dial-Up Networking folder, add Dial-Up Networking :

  • From the My Computer folder, double click on "Control Panel".
  • Double click on "Add/Remove Programs".
  • Select the "Windows Setup" tab at the top of the Add/Remove Programs window.
  • Click on "Communications" which will then be shown highlighted.
  • Click on "Details", click on "Dial Up Networking" to select it, then click "OK".
  • Click on "OK".
  • Dial-Up Networking will then be installed.

Installing TCP/IP

TCP/IP is the protocol used to connect to services like CamNet and Internet Service Providers (ISPs).

  • From Control Panel, double click on "Network".
  • Click "Add", click "Protocol" and click "Add".
  • Select "Microsoft" from the Manufacturers list, and "TCP/IP" from Network Protocols. Click "OK".
  • Click "OK" to close the Network window. You may be asked if you wish to restart your computer - you should.
  • TCP/IP will then be installed.

NOTE: You should not change the TCP/IP Properties. They will be set automatically by Dial-Up Networking.

Creating a connection to CamNet

This will create a program in the Dial-Up Networking folder that will call and connect to CamNet.

There will now be a "CamNet" icon in the "Dial-Up Networking folder. Some configuration options still need to be setup before use.

  • Right click once on the CamNet icon, then click (with left button) on "Properties".
  • Click on "Server Type".

  • Click "OK" to close the CamNet window.

New version of Windows 95

A new version of Microsoft Windows 95 was released 1996.

It is only available when supplied with a new PC and not as an upgrade. It includes several enhancements and some user interface changes as well as the excellent MS Internet Explorer 3.

To disconnect from your CamNet dial-up connection right click on the dial-up networking icon on the task bar (on the right, near the clock) and select Disconnect.

Client Software

Client software is required to use services such as electronic mail, news, chat and World Wide Web pages.

The client software will require the names of some CamNet servers:

Limited access to web pages outside of camnet is available (and the source of much debate so please don't mail me about it!). You need to configure your web browser to use the proxy server www-proxy.cam.net.uk on "Port" 80. You may like to exclude www.cam.net.uk and admin.cam.net.uk. Please see your web browser's online help for more details.

You can set the "Home Page" of your web browser to http://www.cam.net.uk

E-Mail, Home Page and other preferences

Initially, you have an E-Mail address of the form abc123@home.cam.net.uk and the WWW Home Page address of http://www.cam.net.uk/~abc123 (replace abc123 with your CamNet username) and you can also use http://www.cam.net.uk/home/abc123 if you prefer.

You can set an alias for your E-Mail address and an alias for you web address, for example: john@home.cam.net.uk and http://www.cam.net.uk/home/john. Your e-mail and web aliases may be different.

Aliases and other user information such as your password and postal address can be verified and changed using the CamNet administration server. Your information will not be made available to other users unless you wish to be in our on-line directory.

The administration server and additional information can be found with your web browser at http://www.cam.net.uk/adminfaq.html
