This document explains how to install Microsoft's Web Browser, Internet Explorer v3.03 together with the associated Microsoft software necessary to make a dial-up connection to CamNet, to send and receive e-mail and read and post to newsgroups.
After you have installed the software you will need to set up the "Dialer" software with the details of CamNet's phone number and your account. Instructions for this are given in a further document, Setting Up the Dialer.
Although Internet Explorer is a leading web browser, many internet users would recommend using alternative packages to dial-up CamNet (Trumpet Winsock) exchange e-mail (Eudora) and read newsgroups (News Xpress). The two advantages that the Microsoft package suggested here has over these is that it is freeware and very easy to set up. Against it, the e-mail client lacks features and the newsreader only works "on-line", meaning that you will run up high telephone bills if you use this facility heavily. However, recognising that connecting to CamNet for the first time can be intimidating, at least this part is easy using this software. Once connection is achieved it is usually much less of a problem for people to change software if you are not satisfied with your first software package.
To make things easier please read through the entire document before starting to install the software.
This document assumes:
If your computer is connected to a company or academic network, you should consult your network manager before attempting to install Internet Explorer.
Your PC needs to meet or exceed the following specification:
These instructions assume that your floppy drive is A: and hard drive is C:. Substitute the correct drive letter if your machine differs. They also assume that the files on the set of floppies or extracted from the archive DLFUL30F.EXE, have been installed in a directory C:\IE303.
Use File Manager to create the directory C:\IE303 and either:
Close down any applications you may be running, leaving just the Program Manager active.
Select RUN from the FILE MENU and type the following confirming with [Enter]:
C:\IE303\SETUP.EXE
The following window will appear:
| I guess you had better scan through this and check all the conditions! However, in short, it says you are free to use it without charge.
When you are ready click "I Accept". |

Now the full blue screen of a standard Windows Intallation program appears. In the centre is this dialogue. Read it and, if necessary, do what it says before clicking "OK"!
Next you see this screen....
Unless you have very good reason, accept the default directory and click "OK". The next dialogue to appear looks like this:
CamNet recommends that you click on the big "Custom" button. If you click on COMPLETE then you avoid the next screen which gives you the option of not installing certain components. You MUST do a CUSTOM install if your machine has less than 8Mb of RAM because you will need to avoid installing the Virtual Machine for Java.
If you are happy you have all the memory and disk space you require to run the package then you can click on COMPLETE. If you have plans not you use some of the components - the VMJ, for instance, or you plan to use EURDORA as your E-Mail software - then clicking "Custom" allows you to avoid installing the complete package.
Assuming you click on "Custom" this dialogue appears:
Moving the highlight reveals some information about the four different components. Checking and unchecking the options changes the indication of the disk space required and available. Unless you have good reason, select all four components and click "Continue". Once again another dialogue appears. This one controls where the icons used in Internet Explorer will be placed.
|
Unless you have good reason, you should keep them in their own group. However, for many the default name for the Program Group may be too long. Feel free to change it to something shorter before clicking on "Continue". |

After the Program Group is chosen the main file installation begins.
A progress bar dialogue appears and you will be prompted to change disks as required.

The next stage is to set up the dialer to use the modem. The Install Wizard is generally good at detecting the correct modem. Unless you are curious about the modems which the program ought to be able to detect leave the "Don't Detect my modem" box unchecked. When you have read and carried out the instructions on this dialogue click "Next >".
Next the Install procedure tries to find where your modem is connected....
Eventually the "< Back" and "Next >" buttons become live and the dialogue will give a message similar to this:
Assuming you are happy with the modem detected, click "Next >". The dialogue changes to show...
You can click "Finish". A warning dialogue now appears.
Do NOT attempt to restart your computer yet!
This message warns you that the installation program will have added some lines to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. However, if you have opted to install Internet Mail then it will not have added all the lines that are required for use in the UK. Before restarting your computer you will need to add some further lines manually. Details appear in a section below. Finally, you should see the following...
Click on "OK". The SetUp program will complete and you will find an additional Program Group in Program Manager.
The installation of the software is now complete. You will now need to set up the Dialer by double-clicking on the "Get on the Internet" icon. Details of how to do this are given in Setting Up The Dialer.
Microsoft's Internet Mail program has a minor bug. It assumes all users live in the same time zone as Microsoft's Redmond Headquarters. We need to the program we operate under GMT.
Start NOTEPAD (or any other suitable text editor, which can save in ASCII format) and load the file C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT.
You should find that the installation program has added the following two lines:
SET IEPPP=C:\IEXPLORE SET PCTCP=C:\IEXPLORE\PCTCP.SHV
Under these two lines add another:
SET TZ=GMT0BSTNOTE: It is a zero between GMT and BST.
Once you have made this change, you should quit Windows and restart the computer.
