Setting Up the Dialer
for Windows v3.1x Users

Introduction

This document explains how to set up the Dialer module within Microsoft's Internet Explorer v3.03 to connect with CamNet.  It assumes that you have already installed the full package, as explained in Installing CamNet Software for Windows v3.1x Users.

You will need the information contained in your "welcome letter" from CamNet. So make sure you have this available.

Configuring the Dialer

As you start working through these instructions you should have a group in Program Manager which looks like this:

Internet Explorer Program Manager Group

Double click on the Get on the Internet icon.  This launches the Dialer configuration wizard and this dialogue appears:

Internet Connection Wizard Welcome Dialogue

Not much to do here!  Click on the "Next >" button to move on...

Connection Wizard Set Up Options

It's quite straightforward to do things manually, so let's choose that option and then click the "Next >" button...

Enter Service Provider Name

You simply type in "CamNet" here and click "Next >"!

Enter Phone Number and Country

Now you enter CamNet's phone number "01223 517007".  Pick "United Kingdom" from the drop down list and check the "Use Country and Area/City Code" box. Click "Next >" to move on.

Enter User Name and Password

Here you need to enter your own Username and your Password as shown in your "Welcome Letter".  Then click "Next >".

Enter IP Address

Here you enter select the "Always use the following IP Address" option and enter your own IP Address as given in your "Welcome Letter".   Once again click on "Next >" to move on.

Enter DNS Address

On this screen enter the number "193.112.140.13" as shown above.   Then click "Next >".

Select E-Mail Client Set Up

If you have chosen to use an E-Mail client other than the one that comes as part of the Internet Explorer package, then you can select the "No" option and skip the next few screens. If you select "no" in error it doesn't matter as you can run the Wizard later to set up your account.

However, assuming you do want to set up the E-Mail client select "Yes" and click "Next >".

Enter Mail User Name and Password

As you might expect here you have to enter your UserName and your Password again before you click "Next >" again!

Enter Mail Server Address Details

As the dialogue explains, in the first box here enter your name as you would like it to appear on out-going mail. On CamNet E-Mail addresses take the form "username@home.cam.net.uk" so enter "YourUsername@home.cam.net.uk" in the box. Then complete the server names as shown above "pop3.cam.net.uk" and "smtp.cam.net.uk".   Move on by clicking "Next >"

Select News Set Up

This document assumes you select "Yes" and choose to set up the News Reader Client which is part of the Internet Explorer package.  This is the weakest part of the package as it is NOT possible to read and reply in Newsgroups "off-line".  You may therefore wish to install alternative software for this function.  If you do select "No" you should skip the next few screens!  In either case you click on "Next >" to move on!

Enter News Username and Password Details

Getting kind of familiar, all this, isn't it? Yep! You enter "Your Name", "YourUsername@home.cam.net.uk", your Username, your Password (As before the Username and Password come from your welcome letter and should not be copied from the screen above!) and the CamNet news server name, which unsurprisingly is "news.cam.net.uk".  And when you've done all that, click "Next >"!

Wizard Complete Dialogue

Woopee!  The wizard tells us we're done!  Click "Next >"!

Choose Program Manager Group

Now where do your want your CamNet icon?  Unless you've a good reason not to, why not pick "Microsoft Internet Explorer" or whatever you called it when you installed the software.  Select your choice and click "OK".

Program Manager Group

That's all there is to it!  Now you've got a "CamNet" icon!  Double click it and you'll connect to CamNet. Take a look at Your first Connection to see what to expect!
