The Links

On this page you will find links classified under:

National & international sailing organizations

  RYA
The Royal Yachting Association is the UK's national association for all forms of recreational and competitive boating
  ISAF
The International Sailing Federation is the World Governing Body for the Sport of Sailing

Local & Regional sailing organizations

  RYA Eastern Region
The RYA Eastern Region is an affiliation of area associations and clubs and is itself affiliated to the RYA (Royal Yachting Association). There's a link to the main (national) RYA site above.

Sailing-related internet groups & forums

Apart from the original Usenet newsgroup that addressed sailing, uk.rec.sailing, there are many sailing orientated forums and groups. Here are some to try.

  Facebook group of CSC members
Some of the younger members of the Cam Sailing Club have set up a Facebook Group. This link only works if you are already registered ("signed-up") with Facebook. Otherwise this link will give you the opportunity to sign up.
  RYA Forum Index
The RYA has 16 forums covering different areas of interest to sailors and sailing organizations. They include forums with the following names TellMe How, Items for Sale and Wanted, Boating Issues. The link above takes you to the main index page for the RYA forums. However, if you want to seek help from other sailors, there seem to be few users of the RYA forums and you'd do better with the forums run by sailing magazine publishers, linked below.
  Yachts-and-Yachting Forum Index
Yachts and Yachting forums include ones that cover Choosing a boat, Weather and Sailing Techniques. Some are very busy with contributions, others less so.
  Yachting-and-Boating World Forum Index
Yachtings and Boating World publish magazines such as Practical Boat Owner and Yaching Monthly. These forums are busy, but probably less use for issues to do with racing.
  uk.rec.sailing
The charter states"uk.rec.sailing will discuss any and all topics relating to sailing activity in Britain, Eire and European waters. Posts from dinghy sailors, wind-surfers, yachtsmen and women, and all those with an interest in the sport. Posts may include Class Association details, Open Meetings, race accounts, events and issues affecting sailors in area given above."
If you use a browser and click the link above, you'll need a Google password to post messages. It's better to use a good newsreader to access it via a news server. However, there's less activity on this newsgroup now that there are so many others sailing forums and groups; see above.
   uk.rec.waterways
For those interested in waterways. Access by browser or newsreader is as mentioned for uk.rec.sailing immediately above.

Local chandlers & other suppliers to sailors

There's a lack of good suppliers to sailors close to the CSC, but here are some you can try. Detailed feedback to me from CSC members would me welcome (email address on contacts page).

  Ely Boat Chandlers
Ely Boat Chandlers is now run by Keith and Richard, who continue the friendly service to CSC members once given by Peter and Carol Taylor, who knew about sailing and stocked a lot of sailing bits and pieces. Richard and Keith supplied the outboards for the CSC safety boats, so they know of our club. They concentrate on equipment that's general to river boating, but still have a range of sailing equipment. Of course, most of what they don't stock they can order for you! If you're planning a trip to Ely, it may be worth giving them a call on 01 353 663 095, to see if they stock what you need or if there's time for them to order it for you.
  Two Tees' Boat Yard
Two Tees is on the Cam, upstream from the CSC, off Chesterton High St in Water St. (It doesn't seem to have a website, but the phone number is 01 223 365 597 and the link above to Cambridge Online gives more details.)
  Cambridge Dive & Watersports Centre
Probably better for wetsuits and buoyancy aids than for deck and mast fittings, but they do have some chandlery. Feedback to me from CSC members on whether this is correct would be welcome.
  Huntingdon Marine and Leisure
Unfortunately, this general chandlery with good outboard servicing has closed down, as the land is going for development. However, outboard specialist, Jason, has set up on his own. (See immediately below.)
  Jays Marine Services
Past customers of Huntingdon Marine and Leisure whose outboards received attention from Jason, may like to know that he now runs Jays Marine Services, at Isleham, between Ely and Newmarket telephone 077 76 130 921.
  Jonti of Grafham
Sailing chandlery mainly aimed at dinghies and windsurfing, though Jonti claims to have equipment for slightly larger boats; wire rigging up to 4mm
  Mail order
Many chandlers will post equipment to you and there are some large mail order catalogue sellers of sailing equipment. Some charge about £5 as a minimum for a handling and delivery charge, eg, Mailspeed Marine charges £4.99 for items that will fit in a Jiffy bag, but Force 4 Chandlery charge £3.95 for small jiffy bags & low cost delivery (quoted from their websites 6 May 2009).

However, Jimmy Green Marine have a free delivery policy on many items, with a quoted 5-day delivery. I ordered two shackles late afternoon Mon, 15 Aug 2005 and asked if I could have them by Friday. They said yes and the shackles arrived am on Wed, 17 Aug 2005 and no delivery charge. I was impressed!

Navigation on Rivers Cam & Great Ouse

  Cam Conservators
The Cam Conservators are the navigation authority for the River Cam upstream of Bottisham Lock.
  Environment Agency (Gt Ouse Navigation)
The Environment Agency is the navigation authority for the River Cam from Bottisham Lock downstream and all the rest of the Great Ouse system.

The Environment Agency Ouse has a number of useful pages on different websites. This section is just about navigation and recreation aspects, which are on the sites www.visitanglian waterways.co.uk and http://www.visitgreatouse.co.uk. The Agency is also responsible for flood control and water height monitoring for all the waterways.

Environment Agency Great Ouse navigation and recreation:
  Great Ouse Boating Association
GOBA looks after the interests of boat owners on the River Great Ouse and its tributaries, including the River Cam.
   The Fens Waterways Link
New navigation links will make it easier for Cam SC cruisers to make long journeys north, improving access from the Rivers Great Ouse to the River Nene and from the Nene to the River Welland. From the Welland, navigation is possible via its tributary, the River Glen and the via the South Forty Foot Drain and new Boston Link to the River Witham, which takes navigation to Lincoln. Byond Lincoln, the Witham links to the Fossdyke Navigation and the River Trent and eventually the River Humber.

About the links

This page contains links to other sites that may be of interest to sailors in the Cambridge area.

It isn't the purpose of this site to provide a comprehensive set of sailing links; there are plenty of other sites making extravagent claims for their lists of links.

We may add links, at our discretion, sometimes to relevant organizations prepared to include links to the CSC site from theirs.

If you know a site we should add that fits one of the categories in the list on the left, you can email the CSC site manager, whose email address is given on the contacts page.

The CSC is not responsible for the content of any of the sites linked from this page or any other external sites.
