Work starts clubhouse extension, mainly funded by lottery

It's really happening!

The ground is marked out, at least some of the piles have been driven into the peat ready for the extension and the loo that used to be attached to the existing ladies' changing room has been knocked down.

For the time being the old clubhouse will still be quite usable as the extension will be built up behind and around it. Ladies can use the brick loo block behind the clubhouse and extension.

The work should be finished well before the start of sailing in March 1998.

The roped off areas of grass in front on the clubhouse and in the dinghy park are nothing to do with the extension - we have simply levelled the ground and re-seeded it.

Grants pay for most of the work

Most of the money to fund the extension has come from an English Sports Council Lottery Fund grant and a smaller one from South Cambridgeshire District Council. This leaves about 25% to be met from club funds and donations from members.

The grants have been made possible by the hard work of members of the club, preparing plans and applications. Nearly all the work has been done by Rodney Bryant and Brian Pratt.

The main changes are as follows:

  • The whole of the present clubhouse area will be one large clubroom with a kitchen area. This will end the overcrowding at lunchtime on wet race days and allow space for indoor training sessions and so on.
  • The new area behind the present clubhouse will mainly be larger mens' and womens' changing rooms with showers and loos.
  • Between the men's and women's changing rooms with be a loo with access for wheelchairs.
