Members' Email Newsletter No 5, September 2002

Members can now receive information, such as the newsletter below, by email. The newsletters appear here on the website about one month later. The email versions of newsletters may contain extra information that's for members only.

To receive the email version, send a two-word email ("subscribe camsail") to the mailing list. I can't give the mailing list address to send it to here or the address will be picked up by the computers that trawl the web looking for email addresses as targets for junk emails. The email address is given on a board in the clubhouse and was circulated in the CSC News circulated by snail mail with this year's membership fee bill.

1 Help the CSC entry in the RYA Communications Awards 2002
----------------------------------------------------------
The awards are for websites and newsletters. Entries must be in by 27
September.

PLEASE HELP by checking out our website and making sure it's all OK. I
could easily miss some problem. Also I only check it with Microsoft
Internet Explorer 5.0 on a Mac running OS9.1, so it needs checking with
other browsers and on other operating systems, such as Windows and Linux.

Criteria for judging the sites:
* Content - The website adequately covers all the activities
and membership range of the club
* Style - The text and graphics are appropriate, appealing,
interesting and in line with the image of the club
* Navigation around the site
* Time it takes to download the site.

The CSC website is at http://www.cam.net.uk/home/sail

There's also a category for newsletters with these criteria:
* Content - The newsletter adequately covers all the activities
and membership range of the club
* Style - The text and graphics are appropriate, appealing,
interesting and in line with the image of the club
* Two different issues from this year of your club newsletter
should be submitted with your nomination.

As our monthly newsletter is text-only email, it can't contain graphics.
So, although I'll submit two issues as required, I don't expect we have
much hope in this category!

There's also a junior category for entrants under 18 years old contributing
regularly to a newsletter or website. We don't have any junior members
contributing regularly this year ...but how about next year? Any
volunteers???

2 Two CSC crews at European Mirror Championships
------------------------------------------------
The CSC had two crews new at the Mirror European Championships at Medemblik
in Holland, 4-8 August. Ed Lachlan-Cope and Jo Osborn crewed one boat and
Alan Winter and Steven Osborn crewed the other. This time William Winter
went as team support (and coach!?), after helming himself in so many
international Mirror championships that I've lost count!

There were 86 boats taking part and the Winter/Osborn boat came 74th
overall, their best place being 49th, with the Lachlan-Cope/Osborn boat
75th overall and their best place being 56th.

3 Coles win Dimmock's Cote race and the Schofield Trophy
--------------------------------------------------------
A little earlier this year the cruiser race from Dimmock's Cote to Ely and
back took place on the last day in August. The results were:

1 Tanera (Lora and Charles and Jonathan Cole)
2 Circe (Rodney and Richard Bryant and Dale Winter)
3 Free Booter (Rick, John and Joan Benson)
4 Flying Falcon II (John Harris and Neil Howett)
5 La Mouette (Greg Ellwood and Jill Pratt)
6 Nimbus (Stan Adams, Brian Pratt and Phil Baumbach)
7 Wee Emm (John Howett and Alan Cumbers)
Rtd One Way (Graham & Hannah Pledger)

4 PLEASE help the Grounds Committee
-----------------------------------
The Grounds Committee has been working hard this summer with the sail shed
repairs adding to the normal load. There's a working party this Saturday
to do the concrete base for the shed steps and there are now racks for
Laser and Topper sails, though they've still to be painted. There are many
other jobs that now need doing and volunteers to help would be much
appreciated. If you can spare some time to help, please get in touch with
Richard Bryant, who as Rear-commodore chairs the committee (01 480 436
109), or Phil Baumbach who is Hon Grounds Steward as well as Vice-commodore
(01 223 327 379).

5 Tercentenary Conference on Cambridge and the Cam
--------------------------------------------------
Marking 300 years of the Cam Conservators there's to be a conference on
Saturday, 5 October (10.15 am - 4.30 pm). It is being organised by the
Conservators of the River Cam in association with the Centre for Regional
studies, APU. It will take place at Room 765, Helmore Building, Anglia
Polytechnic University, East Road, Cambridge. There will be the following
talks.

The Cam in Context: Transport, Economy and Society in Early Modern Britain

The Conservators of the River Cam, 1702-2002
