I can't give the mailing list address to send it to here or the address will be picked up by the computers that trawl the web looking for email addresses as targets for junk emails. 1 CSC wins Ely event of Cambs Youth Sailing League
--------------------------------------------------
Despite many of the CSC CYSL team being away at camps, on holiday or at other events, the remaining members won the team event by a large margin. Congratulations to our young sailors for this performance. The points were as follows:
Cam SC 31 Hunts 58 Paxton Lakes 72 Ely 107
Individual CSC results were:
Overall: 2nd Dale Winter 3rd Lawrence Mansfield 5th Neil Howett
Under 15s: 1st Lawrence Mansfield 2nd Neil Howett
Under 12s: 1st Emma Houlder (who also won the prize for the youngest competitor)
2 CSC More success for Oliver Tweddell
--------------------------------------
Oliver, aged 11, is currently in 1st place in the National Byte Travellers series by 3 points with 3 Open Meetings left. That's quite an achievement! Well done Oliver! His recent results have included:
1st in Byte Open Medway Regatta Wilsonian SC (13 & 14 July)
3rd in Handicap Fleet Medway Regatta Wilsonian SC (13 & 14 July)
2nd Byte Open Dabchicks SC (27 July 27).
3 CSC members at National Schools Sailing Association
-----------------------------------------------------
Oliver Tweddell also had some good races at the National Schools Sailing Association, but at age 11 still gets overpowered in a Byte when it's windy. On calmer days (Thu & Fri) he had a 1st, a 2nd and a 3rd out of a fleet of 20, but Monday was windier and he had two 5ths, and unfortunately on Tuesday (when there were three races) is was really windy and he had three 20ths, which dragged his overall placing down to 8th. His father Paul says it was a good learning experience about the need to reef is such conditions! Still, it was a remarkable performance overall at such a young age.
His sister Grace, aged 10, also went and had a tough time as one of the youngest competitors in a fleet of 144 Toppers, though she too improved in the lighter winds at the end of the week.
Andrew Davies sailed in a fleet of 55 Radial Lasers at the National Schools Sailing Association Regatta. He came 4th in two races and finished 11th overall.
Chris Covey and Geoff Cunningham took the CSC club Enterprise to sail in a fast handicap fleet of 19 boats, and had a 3rd and two 6ths, finishing 11th.
4 Two CSC crews go to European Mirror Championships
---------------------------------------------------
Two crews have gone to the Mirror European Championships at Medemblik in Holland. Ed Lachlan-Cope and Jo Osborn crew one boat and Alan Winter and Steven Osborn crew the other. William Winter is going as team support (and coach!?).
The programme of races is at:
http://www.mirrorclub.nl/english/ek-2002/calendar.htm
The boats and crews entered are at
http://www.mirrorclub.nl/english/ek-2002/entries.htm
... and presumably once there are results, they'll be on a page of the same website.
5 Another successful Optimist Week
----------------------------------
Despite less wind than would have been ideal, Optimist Week was a great success again. As usual this is thanks to all the people that come and help with sailing, instruction, catering, entertaining, cleaning ...and so on. We particularly thank, first, John and Sue Howett for all the work involved in organizing it and all they did during the week to ensure its success, and, second, our dedicated team of instructors.
6 Sail shed repairs nearly finished
-----------------------------------
The repairs to the main structure of the sail shed are now complete and it looks very smart! The Optimist Week participants were able to use it for instruction sessions, as it now has lighting. Before it can be used to store sails, we still need to replace the racks and hooks to carry the sails. The outside steps are also not finished - they are to have a concrete base and are yet to be painted. Many thanks to the Grounds Committee and the other club members that have done so much to help.
7 Cars on club grounds
----------------------
Members are reminded that cars and other road motor vehicles are not normally allowed on or across the main lawn in front of the club. Permission is needed from the Chair of the Grounds Committee (currently Richard Bryant) or the Ground Steward (currently Phil Baumbach) to take a car beyond the gravel track. If the need to take the vehicle across the lawn is urgent and neither the Chair of the Grounds Committee nor the Ground Steward is present, permission should be sought from the most senior officer of the club available or, if none is available, another member of the main CSC committee.
