Members' Email Newsletter No 3, July 2002

Members can now receive information, such as the newsletter below, by email. The newsletters appear here on the website about one month later. The email versions of newsletters may contain extra information that's for members only.

To receive the email version, send a two-word email ("subscribe camsail") to the mailing list. I can't give the mailing list address to send it to here or the address will be picked up by the computers that trawl the web looking for email addresses as targets for junk emails. The email address is given on a board in the clubhouse and was circulated in the CSC News circulated by snail mail with this year's membership fee bill.

1 CSC Mirrors go to Ely in force and win!
-----------------------------------------
Five Mirrors went from the Cam SC to the Mirror Open event at Ely on Sunday, 23 June. Four races out of five counted towards the final result.

Dale Winter and Joanne Osborn won the first four races (thereby being 1st overall) at which point Dale had to leave to get back to Cambridge, leaving Tom and Tim Lachlan-Cope to win the last race and come 4th overall. Alan Winter and John Houlder came 3rd overall, with Marj Winter and Emma Houlder 5th and Mary and Lucia Lachlan-Cope 9th.

This is a remarkable turnout from our Mirrors - Congratulations!

2 CSC successes at Moth Open
----------------------------
This year's CSC Moth Open was on the 8th June and the trophy, the Cam Coffee Pot, was won by Rick Benson (CSC) and Dave Parker (CSC) came second.

3 Successful Cam Sailfish Open Weekend
--------------------------------------
The Cam Sailfish Open Weekend, 21-23 June, had 6 visiting Sailfish cruisers (down from 8 last year) and a good many local crews took part. Saturday's formal race on the dinghy course had 11 starters. Thank you to Jill Pratt for being Race Officer. The informal, downwind-only race to Dimmock's Cote on Sunday had 13 starters (and 13 finishers!). For the first time in 11 years we had the Saturday evening meal at the Plough & Fleece, with 29 people. All went very well.

The race results were:

Saturday race (11 boats started, 2 retired, Race Officer- Jill Pratt):
-------------
First: Flying Falcon II (CSC), helm John Harris, crew Neil Howett

Second: Blue Marlin (URYC), helm Theo Stanley, crew Reg Dedman

Third: Zephyr (CSC), helm Peter Stratford, crew Judy Stratford

Informal Sunday, down-wind race (13 boats started and finished)
-------------------------------
Token prize to helm of first boat:

Neil Howett helming Flying Falcon II (CSC), (crew John Harris)

As in previous years, spinnakers and cruising chutes were allowed on Sunday. Despite publicity about this, (eg on the website), this year Flying Falcon II was the only boat to use such a sail.

4 CSC Summer Party - Have you got your tickets???
-------------------------------------------------
The CSC Summer Party is on Saturday, 13 July. If you haven't bought your tickets from Rick Benson, HURRY UP! They'll be on sale till Tuesday, 9 July, but please make things easier for Rick by buying them as soon as possible. Rick's phone number is 01 223 522 168.

5 Not the last Sailfish Weekend!
--------------------------------
The 2002 Cam Sailfish Weekend, is the 11th and last to be organized by John Harris. However, CSC member Alan Cumbers, who owns sailfish Wee Emm, has indicated that he's willing to take over from John, ...perhaps with a little help form his friends?? Any offers

6 Summer job opportunities walking along the river
--------------------------------------------------
John Adams of the Environment Agency has written to boating clubs asking us to let our members know the EA is seeking River Inspectors for the summer. I've put their notice in the clubhouse and quote it verbatim below.

"We know from talking to our users, that staff visibility on the riverbank is a very important area in which we must improve. As part of this process we are SEEKING TO EMPLOY seasonal river inspectors whose role will be to provide day to day assistance to boaters on the river.

"We will consider applications for full time (37 hrs per week) and part time (18 hrs per week) posts. All include weekend, evening and bank holiday shifts. The rate of pay will be £5.22 per hour, in addition to a mobile phone, uniform and full safety equipment pack. Your contract will start mid July and finish at the end of September.

"Your basic duties will be to patrol a set reach of waterway and offer assistance to visiting boaters regarding the location and availability of services and facilities. You will also make note of any faults in the system reported to you by passing users. Any boats you see cruising without a licence will be reported to our enforcement specialists, but you will not be expected to carry out any specialist enforcement duties.

"Applicants must be over 16 years old, and have a good level of fitness and be willing to walk 5-15 km per day. You must have excellent communication and diplomacy skills, and be enthusiastic about the Fen Waterways.

"To apply contact Merilyn Jerner on 01733 46 4376 for an application form. If you wish to have an informal chat about the posts contact John Adams, Regional Waterways Manager on 01733 46 4410. Application forms must be returned by Friday 12th July addressed to Merilyn Jerner, Environment Agency, Kingfisher House, Goldhay Way, Orton Goldhay, Peterborough PE2 5ZR."

I'm also putting these newsletters into CamSail News on the website a short while after they've been emailed to those on our mailing list. Anything that's only for our members to see is deleted or edited before the newsletter is made public on the website.
