Members' Email Newsletter No 2, June 2002

Members can now receive information, such as the newsletter below, by email.

All you have to do is to send a two-word email ("subscribe camsail") to the mailing list. I can't give the mailing list address to send it to here or the address will be picked up by the computers that trawl the web looking for email addresses to send junk emails to. The email address is given on a board in the clubhouse and was circulated in the CSC News circulated by snail mail with this year's membership fee bill. (Note the email versions of newsletters may contain extra information that's for members only.)

1 Tweddell family action!
-------------------------
The Tweddell family is busy representing the club at levels from inter-club to international!

Oliver Tweddell, aged 11, is busy at both junior (Topper events) and senior levels (Byte events). He:

- was in the RYA Topper zone squad for the winter season
- was 5th at Paxton Byte Open on 28th April 2002 in very heavy winds
- was 7th at Topper Open (under-19) Leigh on Sea on 11th May 2002
- was 2nd at Milton Keynes Byte Open May 12th 2002
- is to compete in the Byte World Championships, Singapore, 29 Dec 2002 to 5 Jan 2003

Grace Tweddell, aged 10, was 2nd under 12 at the Topper Inland Nationals at Graham 4th-5th May 2002.

Both Oliver and Grace are in the Cambridgeshire Schools team for the National Schools Sailing Association Regatta at Graham, 22-26 July.

Let's not forget that their father, Paul Tweddell, is no mean sailor when he finds time off from supporting his children's sailing to compete himself! So in the heavy winds we also experienced on the Cam, he achieved 1st place in Paxton Byte Open on 28th April 2002.

Well done Tweddells! And good luck!

2 High winds postpone Fachney Trophy race till 3 June
-----------------------------------------------------
The Fachney race was scheduled for 5 May, but with winds gusting to Force 6 it was decided to postpone the race. Unlike the other club cruiser races the Fachney is raced over laps on the dinghy course so that boats can bunch and meet others coming the other way. There's little room to manoeuvre larger boats and they are less manoeuvrable anyway. With the amount of damage a collision can cause between these heavier boats, it was decided to postpone the race till the morning of the Jubilee Regatta on Monday, 3 June.

The fun and games that replaced the postponed race are shown on a temporary page that's not linked from any other page, as it's only for viewing by club members (URL given in emailed version of this newsletter).

3 Website changes
-----------------
After all the changes reported in last month's newsletter, this month there's rather less. Apart from the new temporary page mentioned immediately above, there are just one new Photo Library pages, a new small photo on the racing information page and some minor updatings to pages that had out-of-date information. Also clicking on the main photos in the Photo Library now takes you to the Photo Index page, scrolled to that photos place in the index. (It works well in Netscape's browser, but Internet Explorer jumps to the top of the index for entries near the top.)

The new Photo Library pages are numbers 14 to 18

The racing information page has a photo of the Cambs Youth Sailing League Trophy.

More new photos will appear soon!

4 CSC seeks boats to buy
------------------------
As part of the programme of replacing the club's wooden club boats with fibreglass (GRP), the committee is looking for suitable second-hand GRP Enterprise and Mirror dinghies. If you know of ones in reasonable condition, please get in touch with Rodney Bryant (01223 290420) or Brian Pratt (01223 241410) or any committee member.

5 Claim and name your trailer or trolley
----------------------------------------
We are trying to sort out the empty trailers and trolleys left by the sheds behind the dinghy park. We believe some of them have been abandoned. If any of them belong to you, please make sure they are marked with your name. Please pass on this message to anyone you think might own a trailer of trolley left there.

6 Your help to spread the word
------------------------------
Still very few members have registered to receive messages from this mailing list. Please remind other members you know to register - they won't have received this newsletter unless they've registered!

7 Sail shed repair has now started
----------------------------------
We have now started the extensive repairs to the shed in which sails are normally stored. Jill Pratt was also there helping. Thanks to Brian and Jill Pratt for directing the contractor. Thanks also to Phil and his working party for turning up the day after our Open Day to taking down the parts of the shed that needed replacing. Sails have been moved to the shed nearest the clubhouse.

Helping the Grounds Committee working parties is one of the ways members can help the club. Volunteers to help can find out details from Richard Bryant and Phil Baumbach.

8 Teas
------
Many thanks to those that have served teas or have signed up to do so. We still need more volunteers. If you haven't already done so, please sign up for a turn on the tea rota (Sundays and some bank hols). See notice on clubhouse board.

Let's go for it! This purely functional email newsletter doesn't seem to be what they have in mind, but it costs nothing to enter. We may have a chance with the website: the criteria are content, style, navigation and the time it takes to download the site. If you want to contribute ideas, content or anything else, please get in touch with me. (See contact page of website:

http://www.cam.net.uk/home/sail/contacts.html

That's all folks! I hope you found something useful or interesting in this CSC email newsletter. Let us know what you think.
