Members' Email Newsletter No 1, May 2002

Members can now receive information, such as the newsletter below, by email.

All you have to do is to send a two-word email ("subscribe camsail") to the mailing list. I can't give the mailing list address to send it to here or the address will be picked up by the computers that trawl the web looking for email addresses to send junk emails to. The email address is given on a board in the clubhouse and was circulated in the CSC News circulated by snail mail with this year's membership fee bill.

3 CSC Boats for sale ...and one just looking for a good home
-------------------------------------------------------------
As part of plans to replace some of the club boats the following are for
sale to the highest sealed bid by the end of May. There's also an old
outboard motor. Full details will be on the club notice board, but here
are the reserve prices:

Topper 170, 2 Mirrors 70 each, British Moth 25, outboard motor 25.

Andrew Raw (01223 812417) is trying to find a good home for his 19-ft
Lysander cruiser. She needs some TLC (tender loving care - in other words
she requires some repairs). She lies on CSC grounds. Details on the For
Sale noticeboard.

4 Your help please
------------------
Very few members have so far registered to receive messages from this
mailing list. Please remind other members you know to register - they
won't have received this message!

5 Sail shed repair
------------------
We are about to do extensive repairs to the shed in which sails are
normally stored. Sails have been moved to the shed nearest the clubhouse.
We are doing some of the work ourselves to keep the cost down. Helping the
Grounds Committee working parties is one of the ways members can help the
club. Volunteers to help can find out details from Richard Bryant and Phil
Baumbach.

6 Teas
------
If you haven't already done so, please sign up for a turn on the tea rota
(Sundays and some bank hols). See notice on notice board.

7 Cruisers still in the car park
--------------------------------
While it's fine to leave cruisers neatly in the car park during the winter,
any with floating berths should be in the water by now, leaving only the
four that have dry berths in the car park. If your cruiser is still out
and you won't be using your floating berth for a while, please let Charles
Cole know, so that one of those with just a dry berth can use it till
you're ready to launch your boat. Charles will also direct you to where
you should leave your boat on its trailer so that it doesn't get in other
members' way.

8 In memoriam
-------------
Members who haven't already heard will be sad to hear that two members,
David Bryant and Peter Claydon, have died tragically. Although both had
moved away from the Cambridge area and sailed with other clubs, they had
maintained their CSC memberships and some members will remember them
sailing at the CSC, where they learned to sail as boys. The club has made
donations to the charities the families requested, the Meningitis Trust and
the RNLI.

    David Bryant 1961-2002
    ----------------------
David Bryant died on 10 February from meningitis. To present members of
the CSC, he was the least known of the Bryant brothers because he lived
with his family in Berkhamsted and sailed mainly at Aldenham Sailing Club,
where he was Rear Commodore. Despite this he had generously agreed to be
our RYA Senior Instructor for this year's Optimist Week. This is typical
of the generous way the Bryant family gives its time and energy to the
club. David was British Moth Junior Champion on more than one occasion and
presented the club with the Cam Coffee Pot for the Moth Open.

There are fine tributes to David from both the Commodore and Sailing
Secretary of Aldenham SC on the front page of the ASC Newsletter April
Newsletter. This is available as a PDF either by selecting "Newsletter"
from the menu on the left-hand side of the ASC website homepage at
http://www.aldenhamsc.co.uk/ or directly from
http://www.rliddell.uklinux.net/newsletter/owl.pdf

    Peter Claydon 1949-2002
    -----------------------
New members may not know that Peter Claydon's father, Len, is still a
central figure at the club, on duty most Sunday afternoons and on many open
meetings as Officer of the Day, in charge of running the races from the
box. We have displayed in the clubhouse a short account Len wrote about
Peter's tragic accident falling overboard at night in March in Cherbourg
harbour at the stopover during a Junior Offshore Group race. I asked Len
about Peter's earlier sailing life and Len and Joyce Claydon wrote:

"From racing a Cadet dinghy at CSC Peter progressed to an Enterprise,
having some success in both classes before going to London University in
1968. In 1969 in his Enterprise, Breta, he won 6 firsts and several other
places at clubs open meetings all over East Anglia and the London area
(including the Granta Cup at Denver). During 1969 he also won, with a crew
from London University, the selection trials to represent England at the
Junior World Championships in Bermuda, which they went on to win.

"Until he graduated, he continued to race with Imperial College, London
University and other British University Sailing Association teams. BUSA
selected him for the team to spend 10 weeks in America, racing against
American Universities.

After he was married, Peter and his wife sailed a lot around Calshot and
the Solent, but more recently they, together with another couple, bought a
Contessa 32, which they raced regularly. It was on the rest day during the
Junior Offshore Group Easter races (Cowes to Cherbourg and Cherbourg to
Cowes) that Peter's tragic accident occurred."
