What do we do?
Cycle rides
- Every Sunday morning and afternoon, all year, there are led cycle
rides. The afternoon rides leave at 2.10 pm; the time the rides
leave in the morning depends on the season. Midweek rides for mountain
bikers as well as tourists are regular events in most weeks, too.
- Non-members are always welcome. Regular attenders will be encouraged to
join the CTC. For legal reasons,
anyone leading a CTC bike ride or organising a Club event must be a
member of the CTC.
- Meeting place for almost all rides is next to the Hobson's Conduit
monument at the Lensfield Road end of Brookside in Cambridge. We meet ten
minutes before the ride sets off: if you're new, please use this time to
introduce yourself to the run's leader.
- The current runs list gives the start time
and destination for all our rides. Ask Greta Lumbers or Sue Taylor for a
paper copy.
- The rides which leave in the morning are 'all day' rides. We stop for a
snack (which you'll need to bring with you) at about 11 am. We stop again
for lunch - usually at a pub. In summer, most people bring sandwiches for
lunch. We set off again for the afternoon, and meet the 'afternoon' run
for tea at 4.30 (in winter) or 5.00 pm (in summer). Tea usually includes
sandwiches and cakes and costs about £2.50.
- Sunday rides go at about 12 mph, with a bit of variation depending
on who turns up. The all-day ride can cover between 50 and 100 miles; the
afternoon ride between 20 and 45. Both get back to Cambridge in the early
evening.
- Mountain bike rides are on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and set off at
7.30 pm. These end at a pub at about 9 pm before returning home. These
are suitable only for mountain bikes, mostly on bridleways, and you'll
need good lights. For more information about the mountain bike section,
who go for muddy weekends and other special events occasionally,
telephone Jacob Hassan.
- Thursday's all day rides suit people who are free mid-week. They return
to Cambridge between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. but please bring lights
from October onwards, in case we are delayed. For more information about
any Thursday day-time ride, telephone Greta Lumbers.
- During the winter months the Clubroom is open every last Tuesday of the
month (except December). It's in the Unicorn, Church Lane, Trumpington.
Clubroom events start at 8 p.m. and there is a small charge,
normally 50p, to cover the hire of the room.
- The mountain bike section often meet in the bar of the Unicorn on
winter Tuesday evenings, even when there isn't a clubroom event
listed.
Social events
Social events (theatre or cinema trips, or meals out) take place
occasionally throughout the year.
Longer tours
We organise weekend trips or tours at bank holidays, including Christmas,
in other areas of Britain. The accommodation can be anything from camping to
youth hostels or bed and breakfast.
The CTC nationally runs tours or all kinds, all over the world.
CTC and the Cambridge DA
- The Cambridge District Association of the Cyclists' Touring Club was
formed in 1921 and now covers local matters for Cambridgeshire for the
CTC. It has about 700 members in the county. The CTC is Britain's largest cycling
organisation, with over 40 000 members throughout the UK and
overseas. Founded in 1878, the CTC provides travel and technical advice,
legal aid and insurance to members, campaigns to improve facilities and
opportunities for all cyclists, and publishes Cycle Touring and
Campaigning, a magazine for its members, every two months.
- Campaigning and lobbying is done by the CTC at a national level. In the
city of Cambridge, local campaigning is done very well by the Cambridge Cycling Campaign, whose
activities are mostly complementary to the CTC Cambridge DA's. The
Cambridge DA's Rights secretary also wrote these Web pages and is a
member of the Cycling Campaign.
