Report solidarity visit to the Cambridge Mosque
|
|
What was meant to be only a short symbolical visit to the noon prayer in the Cambridge Mosque on Saturday 16th July, turned into a very open discussion with a picnic atmosphere in the Mosque in 1 Mawson Road, which lasted 2 hours. The friendly welcome by the Muslims and the direct contact between people of different faith and political inclination, quicky warmed the hearts of all present. The Secretary of the Cambridge Islamic Centre, Mr. Hisham, welcomed about a dozen visitors and encouraged all to ask questions. Ralph Nimmann, initiator of this solidarity visit and chair of the Cambridge Inter-Faith Group, pointed out, that everyone came to support a peaceful way and that we are challenged not to follow the path of hate and war, but rather practise compassion, love and understanding. A Quaker saw this meeting as the beginning of building bridges between Muslims and other faith groups in Cambridge. The representative of the Indian community, Suresh Patel, suggested to organise regular meetings between the Muslims and Hindus. Many felt it would be good to organise future friendship meetings with Muslims. Contacts: Cambridge Mosque (Abu Bakr Siddiq Islamic Centre), 1 Mawson Road (off Mill Road), phone: 01223 350134
