Faith Groups

• Baha'i

  www.bahai.org.uk has a directory of local meetings, including the Cambridge University Baha'i Society and other groups in East Anglia.

  Brahma Kumaris

  Inner Space on King's Parade in Central Cambridge has a programme of courses, retreats and talks, which would be of particular interest to Cambridge based people.
  The national website gives the background on Brahma Kumaris including a history of the movement.

• Buddhism

  The Western Buddhist Order has a house on Newmarket Road, the Cambridge Buddhist Centre.
  Cambridge University Buddhist Society.
  Buddhist Page Cambridge, listing all Buddhist groups around Cambridge, with descriptions and contact details (on Rainbow Network Cambridge).
  For general information and a worldwide Buddhist Directory, see the Buddha Dharma Education Association.

• Christianity

  There are too many churches in Cambridge and student Christian groups to mention all of them. Two lists may be helpful:
  @ Work with You, an ecumenical site set up for the millennium, allows you to list local churches by denomination and/or ward (local government area), with an emphasis on information about social and community action rather than religious services.
  The University Deans and Chaplains site gives links mainly to city centre churches, and is reasonably up to date. There is also a complete set of links to college chapels, and a number of student organizations are also listed. The site includes a diary of events.
  Again, there are too many national and international Christian sites: but readers might like to know of a page of prayers for world peace, on a site set up by the Church of England. Incidentally, the "links" page on that site will connect you to any of the major Christian denominations in the country.

• Hare Krishna

  Bhaktivedanta Manor, off the M40 near Watford, is one of the Hare Krishna movement's most famous centres, home to the sacred altar Deities of Shri Shri Radha-Gokulananda and Sita-Rama, a favourite holy place of ISKCON's founder-acharya Shrila Prabhupada, and focus for the largest community of devotees in Europe. Bhaktivedanta Manor is the UK headquarters for the International Society for Krishna Consciousness.

• Hinduism

  The Indian Cultural and Community Organization at Bharat Bhavan, Mill Road.
  Cambridge University Hindu Cultural Society.

• Islam

  A new and very useful site is www.cambridgemuslims.info. Here are some other sites.

  Cambridge University Islamic Society
  The Masud web site is a regional Muslim site.
  The UK Islamic Mission describe their web site as British Muslims' Web Portal. The Mission has branches in Luton and Peterborough.
  The Iqra Trust provides information on Islam for schools.
  The Muslim Council of Britain describes itself as "a step towards greater consultation, cooperation and coordination on Muslim affairs in the UK

• Judaism

  Cambridge University Jewish Society includes information about the synagogue in Thompsons Lane.

• Sikhism

  www.sikh.net is a global site which includes directories of gurdwaras by country and region, but without links.
  Sikhism in the UK: Directory begins with a section of national Sikh organizations; the list of gurdwaras seems much the same as on the international site.
  www.sikhs.org.uk is a news service, covering attempts to set up a national Sikh body. It does not appear to have been updated this year.
  D T F Books is a specialist Sikh book shop, the only one in the UK, and stocks resources for RE.
  The British Association of Sikh Students lists university Sikh societies and gives news and information of particular interest to students. The Sikh society at Cambridge University does not have a web site.

• The Cambridge Evening News web site has a large amount of mainly non-electronic address information for many local groups, with a section on Religion.  It has recently been remodelled, with a new search engine.

• The Cambridge Ethnic Community Forum is an umbrella organization for all minority communities in Cambridge.

Regional and National Links

• The East of England Faiths Agency (EEFA) is a regional network covering the six eastern counties of Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk.
  
• The East of England Faiths Council, covering the same geographic area as the above, brings together people from a variety of faiths to develop ways of working together and relating to regional government. Their site includes a Calendar of Festivals.
  
• Suffolk Inter-Faith Resource (SIFRE), based at Suffolk College, was established in 1994 by a group of people representing the faiths and cultures of the residents of Ipswich and Suffolk. Their intent is to promote understanding between people of different faiths and to provide a means by which those who wish to increase their understanding of the different faiths have easy and ready access to that possibility.
  
• The Inter Faith Network for the UK - www.interfaith.co.uk works to build good relations between the communities of all the major faiths in Britain.  The Cambridge Inter-Faith Group is one of more than 90 member bodies. Address: 8A Lower Grosvenor Place, London, SW1W OEN, Tel: 020 7931 7766
  
• The pioneering Multifaith Centre at the University of Derby has set up Multifaithnet, a website that reflects and illuminates the full spectrum of faith and religion within the UK's diverse society.  The site includes a directory (off-line when I visited) and discussion boards on which the voices of moderation try to balance the stridency of some postings.
  
• Greenwich Multi-Faith Forum have told us about their new web site. It is beautifully clear and very informative.
  
• United Religions Initiative (motto: Sharing the Sacred, Saving the World) has links to a variety of information about each faith represented. Unfortunately they no longer provide a key to the symbols used in the logo at the top left hand corner of this page.
  
• Beliefnet covers a wide range of topics, and offers a range of free Email newsletters.
• NEW: The website www.bibleandkoran.net has the objective to build a bridge between Muslims and Christians: the integraltexts of the Bible and the Qu'ran alongside each other on one website! The site appears in Dutch, English and Arabic.

• Striving Together in Dialogue. A Muslim-Christian Call to Reflection and Action This document has been published by the World Council of Churches and other partners, including Islamic organisations and specialised journals. Hopefully, it will be widely circulated and used in discussions and educational programs. It is the fruit of a Muslim-Christian meeting held in Amersfoort, Netherlands in November 2000.

• Calendars of Religious Festivals

  SHAP provides a simple British calendar of religious festivals, but the Religious Tolerance site described below gives a wider range, and explains the significance of the festivals.

  BBC Online has a section dedicated to news with a religious dimension.

• Religious Tolerance

  Cambridge Mayor and faith groups about "Tolerance"
  This Canadian web site devoted to issues of Religious Tolerance and Religious Intolerance is full of information about the world's religions and their inter-relations. Somewhat overloaded with advertizers' banners, but worth persevering.

• Inter-Faith Marriages

  http://interfaithmarriage.org.uk is a clear and helpful new site established by Christians married to people of other faiths.
  The Muslim-Christian Marriage Group meets in Southall in North-West London, and produces a newsletter.
  The Dovetail Institute for interfaith family resources is mainly concerned with Jewish-Christian relationships. Based in the USA, it provides publications including free leaflets (not sure whether this is only within the USA) and a journal, conferences, and an on-line discussion group.

• Journals

  Current Dialogue is an on-line journal on inter-faith dialogue produced by the World Council of Churches. This link takes you to the index of on-line issues.
