There were a number of pictures in the collection from which the shot on the left was taken. From them it is clear that these were all taken at one event and that this one took place on what is now known as Pymoor Recreation Ground. Initially I thought the game being played was the old pub game of Bar Billiards. However, all tables that I remember had fewer holes, did not have the rounded top to the playing surface that is shown here and would have had "mushrooms" placed in front of some of the holes, for which penalties were incurred if they were knocked over.
What is not known is who the player is and who are any of the other people shown. If you know, please let me know.
This looks much more like a traditional fairground game. Again, it would be nice to hear from anyone who believes they know the names of those involved. The back of the original photograph had the name "P Stevens" written on it. Who knows about him?
What surprised me about all these photographs was the length of the grass. If this area was in use as the cricket ground at this time (and I understand that it has been used as such since the 1920s), why wasn't it being cut.
It wasn't just grown-ups who had things to do. These children were obviously ready for some kind of fancy dress competition. Any boy who was around in those days would certainly be jealous of the cowboy outfit. What I don't know is who the two lads at the back are meant to be. Are they characters from film or TV? Let me know what you think!
If you can give further information about any of these photographs please let me know. I would also welcome any further photographs you have of Pymoor people having fun, especially if there are village land marks in the background.
