For such a small village there really is an amazing mixture of talent and hobbies. The Hundred Foot Observatory is a full scale astronomical observatory which includes a computer controlled 12" telescope able to track stars as they traverse the sky. The web site includes images of the Hale-Bopp comet. Robert Dalby likes to hear from others interested in astronomy, especially those with an interest in using charged couple device cameras for astronomical photography.
At almost the other end of the scale, we have someone who makes all manner of bag pipes. They include medieval designs as well some based on pictures of Roman instruments. David Marshall sells his instruments all over the world. His Ancestral Instruments site, features pictures of himself and others playing his instruments as well as sound clips so you can really get a feel for their music.
More in keeping with the industries you might expect in a rural setting is Country Vehicles. They produce horse boxes. You can find their Guide to Buying a Horse Box on the web. They don't have a site of their own, but they do advertise through another company which has links from this guide.
Another "rural business" is run by Chris Nye. His business CN Seeds produces herb and flower seeds and has customers all over Europe.
At the other extreme is Business Visions, a "high tech" presentation graphics company, run by Robert Dalby
Apart from farming, there are the following business types based in the village:
Haulage Contractors
Building Maintenance
Architectural Drawing Office
Farm Machinery Sales (This business grew and left the village in 1998. It's premises were put up for sale.)
Mobile Ice Cream Sales
Specialist Hi-Fi Manufacturer
Herb and small plant Nursery
If you know of other local businesses with internet connections, please tell me.
Local resident, and currently university student, John Allen, has written a review of this site. Take a look and see what he says!

You can find out lots more about Ely and the surrounding area from Ely On-Line. I was so impressed with Ely On-Line that I adopted its "linen" background to enable better integration with the site! It's a good mix of business, tourist and community information and links and easy to navigate!
East Cambs On-Line News is a more clutered site and not so easy to navigate. It features an archive of stories clipped from a local newspaper and hosts the Wicken Fen site both of which are worth looking at. It lacks the sophisticated professionalism of Ely On-Line but has a more "community" feel, which may be what you are looking for.

X-CEL FM is a radio station based in Littleport, just to the north of Ely. It's just obtained its licence and will be broadcasting on 107.1 and 107.5 FM. Test transmissions will start in the near future. X-Cel say they will be making appearances around Fenland and one of their first outside broadcasts is due to be at the Pymoor Agricultural and Country Show on 3 July 1999. Even if you don't have an interest in radio, it does have well presented local history pages!
If you want to find out about other small fenland villages such as Aldreth, Witchford or Reach then you will find Ely On-Line's Village Links page to be the best place. I also understand that there is a special Haddenham and Aldreth’s Photos from the Past page. A little further afield is Swavesey which is between St. Ives and Cambridge. If your interest is local wild life then don't forget Wicken Fen which, as mentioned above, is hosted at East Cambs On-Line News!
