The picture here is of Frith Head Drove, taken from its junction with Main Street. Like many others in the area is a public "byway". This means that any form of transport may use it, not just pedestrians and horse riders. The other types of track you will find in the area are "bridleways", which means both people and horses may use it and "footpaths", which only people may use.
Pygore Drove which is highlighted on the Sketch Map, is particular interest for the village in that it is the only local drove lined with mature trees. While this adds a wildlife interest, it has the disadvantage that it doesn't dry out in the spring as fast as many of the other local droves. This can make it a very muddy route for walking your dog for much of the year!
Except for two tracks, all the lanes on the sketch map shown with double dotted lines are totally unsurfaced. In winter they become unpassable to all but four wheel drive tractors and similar vehicles with exceptional ground clearance.
The two double dotted line tracks shown on the map which are surfaced are the one that runs beside the New Bedford River and the one that runs from this to the School. These two have a hardcore surface, but no tarmac.
