This half buried tree is known as a "bog oak". Bog Oaks are not necessarily oaks, but this is the name given to any prehistoric tree unearthed from where it fell and was preserved in the peat soil. This one was uncovered in the early 1960s on the fields between the school and the river bank.
Bog Oaks cause local farmers many problems. They damage farm machinery and, because of their size are difficult to remove. The heavy lifting gear which it might easily remove them on firmer soils often cannot be used on the light peat which cover the fens.
