Airport Threat at Alconbury

The Government’s announcement about the future development of new airports for Britain included a possible new major airport at Alconbury. CPRE Cambridgeshire has been vigorously opposed to proposals by ADL Alconbury Developments Ltd to develop the old airfield as an integrated road, rail and air freight distribution centre, and was instrumental in getting ADL to withdraw their application for the establishment of commercial airfreight operations. We are therefore very concerned at a proposal for an airport there.

CPRE Cambridgeshire’s view is that the area is already well served by airports, both for passengers and freight, and there is no need for a new airport at Alconbury. The Government should abandon its predict and provide attitude to air transport. The ecological damage caused by aviation is considerable and yet airlines pay no duty on aircraft fuel. Added to this, it is clear that a new airport would result in increased traffic to Alconbury, more pollution and more pressure for development, a situation which is clearly unsustainable.

We will be attending public meetings to consult local people, as well as our members. Please contact transport_cambscpre@breathe.com if you are interested in knowing more or helping.

Our position paper sets out our views on the Government’s aviation proposals (see also our press releases about the Alconbury proposals in particular).
