Year for Priests Logo
YEAR FOR PRIESTS

The Holy See is offering a plenary indulgence for all faithful on the occasion of the Year for Priests, which is set to begin 19th June and last one year. The Year for Priests marks the 150th anniversary of the death of Saint Jean Marie Vianney, also known as the Curé de Ars.

The decree noted that Benedict XVI will preside at the opening liturgy on 19th June, the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, "a day of priestly sanctification." He will celebrate vespers before the relics of the saint, brought to Rome for the occasion by the Bishop of the French Diocese of Belley-Ars. The Year will end in St Peter's Square, in the presence of priests from all over the world "who will renew their faithfulness to Christ and their bonds of fraternity."

For priests, the plenary indulgence can be gained by praying lauds or vespers before the Blessed Sacrament exposed to public adoration or in the tabernacle. They must also "offer themselves with a ready and generous heart for the celebration of the sacraments, especially the sacrament of penance."

The plenary indulgence, which under current norms must be accompanied by sacramental confession, the Eucharist and praying for the intentions of the Pope, can also by applied to deceased priests. Priests are granted a partial indulgence, also applicable to deceased priests, every time they "devotedly recite the prayers duly approved to lead a saintly life and to carry out the duties entrusted to them."

For the faithful, a plenary indulgence can be obtained on the opening and closing days of the Year for Priests, on the 150th anniversary of the death of Saint Jean-Marie Vianney, on the first Thursday of the month, or on any other day established by the Ordinaries (Bishops) of particular places for the good of the faithful.

To obtain the indulgence the faithful must attend Mass in an oratory or Church and offer prayers to "Jesus Christ, supreme and eternal Priest, for the priests of the Church, or perform any good work to sanctify and mould them to his heart."

The conditions for the faithful for earning a plenary indulgence are to have gone to confession and prayed for the intentions of the Pope.

The elderly, the sick, and all those who for any legitimate reason are unable to leave their homes may obtain the plenary indulgence if, with the intention of observing the usual three conditions as soon as they can, "on the days concerned, they pray for the sanctification of priests and offer their sickness and suffering to God through Mary, Queen of the Apostles." A partial indulgence is offered to the faithful when they repeat five times the Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be, or any other duly approved prayer "in honour of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, to ask that priests maintain purity and sanctity of life."

A PRAYER FOR PRIESTS

Lord Jesus, you have chosen your priests from among us and sent them out to proclaim your word and to act in your name.

For so great a gift to your Church, we give you praise and thanksgiving. We ask you to fill them with the fire of your love, that their ministry may reveal your presence in the Church.

Since they are earthen vessels, we pray that your power shine out through their weakness.

In their afflictions let them never be crushed; in their doubts never despair; in temptation never be destroyed; in persecution never abandoned. Inspire them through prayer to live each day the mystery of your dying and rising.

In times of weakness send them your Spirit, and help them to praise your heavenly Father and pray for poor sinners.

By the same Holy Spirit put your words on their lips and your love in their hearts, to bring good news to the poor and healing to the broken-hearted.

And may the gift of Mary your mother, to the disciple whom you loved, be your gift to every priest. Grant that she who formed you in her human image, may form them in your divine image, by the power of your Spirit, to the glory of God the Father.

Amen.

We need Catechists.

If you would be willing to be taught and trained at the parish's expense would you consider taking this course?

Starting in September on Wednesday evenings we will be offering a course to enable those who complete the course to be commissioned as Parish Catechists.

We are trying to provide in the Parish a Catholic education for our children and young people from Years 1-9 inclusive but this means having to move slowly but surely by first educating and enabling people to become catechists.

We are looking for people who can make a weekly commitment (during term time) on a Wednesday evening for 2 hours and an occasional longer session on a Sunday afternoon. That is the basic time commitment for the classes. Modules to be covered:

Sessions specifically for those involved in: Some of the modules echo those in the Catholic Certificate in Religious Studies and the Maryvale Certificate from Birmingham but they would be covered at a much simpler level.

There is no requirement to write essays though there might be some directed reading or reflection between sessions.

Each student will need a Bible and a copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

CATECHISTS TRAINING REGISTRATION FORMS   These forms are available for anyone interested in being trained as a catechist in the Sacristy. If you have done catechetical teaching in the past you will find this course valuable. It is not the same level as the Echoes Course which some of you completed a few years ago. It does require a weekly commitment during Term Time.

WELCOME

WE WELCOME   any visitors to the Parish this weekend and hope that you will be assured of our prayers for you when you return to your home.

Mission Outreach

HELPERS OF MOTHER TERESA   We continue to meet monthly to knit or crochet children's clothes for African orphanages. Our goods are taken three times a year to an organization called Feed the Children, which is based in Ruscombe, near Reading, and has contacts in several African countries, and in Eastern Europe, and are able to distribute the goods where they are most needed. They are at present making an attempt to be accepted in Zimbabwe. During 2008 we sent 15 sacks of knitted blankets, hats, baby clothes and knits for children up to the age of 14. We are grateful to Frank Morgan, our transporter, and the many people who work at home for us, and to those who have donated wool. We have recently had an anonymous donation of a sack of squares for blankets, and would like to say a special thank-you for this. For more information please phone Maureen Harper on the number in the printed Newsletter, or Email.

PASTORAL NOTICES

PRAYER TO
THE HOLY SPIRIT

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and enkindle in them the fire of your love.

V. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created.

R. And you shall renew the face of the earth.

Let us pray.
O God, who has taught the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit, grant that by the same Spirit we may be always truly wise, and ever rejoice in His consolation. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

LATIN MASS   There will be a weekly celebration of the New Rite of Mass in Latin either on a Wednesday or Thursday evening and/or Tuesday morning each week. Booklets with Latin/English will be provided.

MAKING GOOD USE OF THE SACRAMENT OF PENANCE

Prepare to encounter Jesus in this sacrament by making an honest and heartfelt examination of conscience.

Examination of Conscience

Recall your sins. Calmly and honestly ask yourself what you have done with full knowledge and full consent against God and the Church's commandments.
Acts of Contrition
O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of Heaven, and the pains of Hell; but most of all because I love Thee, my God, Who art all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen.

I am truly sorry for every sin, mortal and venial, for all the sins of my childhood up to the present hour. I know my sins have wounded your loving Heart, O my Saviour, let me be freed from the bonds of evil through the most bitter Passion of My Redeemer. Amen. O My Jesus, forget and forgive what I have been. Amen. Lord Jesus, have mercy on me a sinner and give me the grace to live for You alone. Amen.

Religious Education

Children at Non-Catholic Primary Schools   There is a three-year course of instruction for children attending non-Catholic schools. Parents are encouraged to enrol their children when they enter Year 1. Children receive the Sacrament of Penance and Holy Communion in Year 3

CONFIRMATION CLASS   Contact Mr. John Bell

Marriage Preparation   Six months notice is required as well as suitable preparation. This is a Diocesan policy and is fairly universal.
Contact: Fr Eugène

CHILDREN'S LITURGY OF THE WORD   Takes place during the 10h00 Mass each Sunday during Term time. There are two groups. Group 1 is for children aged 3-5 years and Group 2 is for children aged 6-8 years. The children leave prior to the Penitential Rite at Mass and rejoin their families at the Offertory.

They will experience the Scriptures in their own idiom and participate in creative ways to understand the theme of the liturgy for that particular Sunday.

Parents are asked to respect the age restrictions. Older children and children too young can be disruptive because the material is pitched for the ages concerned.

CHILDREN'S LITURGY at 12h00 MASS   We have many families coming to our 12h00 Mass and children aged Reception to Year 3 who would benefit from instruction and their own Liturgy of the Word as provided at our 10h00 Mass. Is there anyone willing to help this move forward? See Fr Eugène.

INTERNET CATECHESIS

A NEW COURSE TO TRAIN CATECHISTS   As you will soon note from the Bishop's Pastoral Visitation Report and those of you who came to his talk between the two Sunday Masses last week will have already heard that we have a growing need for catechists in the Diocese. We need to progress in our faith instruction to cover the period from First Holy Communion to Confirmation, and beyond as well as providing more help in the areas of baptism and marriage. I have approached our Deanery Catechist, Maggie Stephenson, whom some of you will know from the Echoes Course a few years ago. She is willing to do a course for us in Cambridge, so please keep your eyes pealed on the newsletter for further information.

WHY TEACH?

The old catechism asked these two questions as the very first things a child should learn.

Q. Who made you?
A. God made me.

Q. Why did God make you?
A. God made me to know him, to love him and to serve him in this world so that I would be happy with him for ever in the next.

All catechesis is based on trying to give people a better understanding of this mysterious love relationship that God has for us and hopefully that we have for him.

As we nourish our children with food, clothe them, and educate them in the various sciences so we also need to feed them with God's Word and the Sacraments, clothe them in righteousness and right living and educate them in the true science which is the will of God made known through His Son Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit to the Church.

Act of Consecration to the Sacred Heart

O Sacred Heart of Jesus, to Thee I consecrate and offer up my person and my life, my actions, trials, and sufferings, that my entire being may henceforth only be employed in loving, honouring and glorifying Thee. This is my irrevocable will, to belong entirely to Thee, and to do all for Thy love, renouncing with my whole heart all that can displease Thee.
I take Thee, O Sacred Heart, for the sole object of my love, the protection of my life, the pledge of my salvation, the remedy of my frailty and inconstancy, the reparation for all the defects of my life, and my secure refuge at the hour of my death. Be Thou, O Most Merciful Heart, my justification before God Thy Father, and screen me from His anger which I have so justly merited. I fear all from my own weakness and malice, but placing my entire confidence in Thee, O Heart of Love, I hope all from Thine infinite Goodness. Annihilate in me all that can displease or resist Thee. Imprint Thy pure love so deeply in my heart that I may never forget Thee or be separated from Thee.
I beseech Thee, through Thine infinite Goodness, grant that my name be engraved upon Thy Heart, for in this I place all my happiness and all my glory, to live and to die as one of Thy devoted servants.
Amen
