GENERAL NOTICES

THE HOLY ROSARY   is normally prayed each evening with Eucharistic Adoration from 18h15-19h00 except on Thursdays when it takes place as part of the Cenacle.

THE MASS REGISTER   If you wish to have a Mass offered in the near future you can do so by completing one of the brown envelopes (on the green-topped tables in the porch) and put your completed request in the offertory basket of through the Presbytery letterbox.

If you would like to have Mass offered on a Sunday please remember that there are only 52 in a year. Mass is offered each day in the parish at a variety of times during the week to allow people to attend at least one additional Mass each week so you may choose a day when it is convenient for you to be there.

CHURCH HOURS   The church is accessible by the Code on the door each day from 08h00 until 19h30 unless other arrangements have been made. If you see the sign "ALARM ON" believe it!

THIRTIETH ANNIVERSARY PARISH PARTY   Thanks to all who came to the meeting and those who volunteered by word of mouth. The plans are as follows:

OUR CONDOLENCES   to John Richardson on the death of his wife Veronica. Rest eternal grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace. Amen

ALTAR SERVERS NEEDED   We have been blessed with a good number of Altar Servers over the years but they do grow-up and move on to university or other places. We are currently holding our own but we do need young recruits to fill the gap. Jenny Sinclair is our Co-Ordinator and she will train your child and make sure they feel secure and confident in what they are doing. We are looking for children aged 6+. Obviously at age 6 they will not have made their First Holy Communion until next year but that is acceptable. Parents can contact Jenny by email or speak to her after the 10h00 Mass.

Mission Outreach

JUBILEE DEBT CAMPAIGN - EIGHT YEARS ON   Back in the year 2000, 51percent of Tanzanian children did not go to primary school. By 2006, this had fallen to 27percent thanks largely to cancellation of much of the country's "unpayable debt" allowing school fees to be abolished.

Ten years ago, church groups, including CAFOD, and others united as the Jubilee Debt Campaign and succeeded in getting the leaders of the richest countries to promise to cancel such debt for the poorest countries. But progress has been painfully slow, so we need to keep reminding them about the "unfinished business". So far only 20percent of "unpayable debt" has actually been cancelled. Every day the world's poorest countries spend over $100 million paying for debt owed to rich countries, banks & international bodies. Yet much of the remaining $400 billion of "unpayable" debt comes from irresponsible lending to previous oppressive regimes. Campaigners point to 36 countries (including the Philippines, Bangladesh & Kenya) where interest and other debt payments are so high a burden on government budgets that too little remains for health, education, housing, water and other essential services. Inevitably, the poorest suffer the most. But none of these countries qualify for the current schemes for debt cancellation, as the real needs of the poor are largely ignored by the complex rules.

The weekend of 26th/27th JULY we will be inviting you to support this call for justice by signing a message calling on the British Government to accelerate debt cancellation and to continue to encourage other lenders to do the same. Please consider joining in this action whatever your nationality, as the Jubilee Debt Campaign is part of a strong international movement across over 50 countries. CAFOD's partners in countries such as Zambia have been active in local campaigns, showing how "unpayable debt" severely obstructs their work combating poverty. This is our chance to add our voices in their support.

HELPERS OF MOTHER TERESA   meet on the fourth Thursday of each month. For more information please phone Maureen Harper on the number in the printed Newsletter, or Email.

PASTORAL NOTICES

FEAST THIS WEEK

SAINT BRIDGET OF SWEDEN - Patron of Europe The most celebrated saint of the Northern kingdoms, born about 1303; died 23 July, 1373. She was the daughter of Birger Persson, governor and provincial judge (Lagman) of Uppland, and of Ingeborg Bengtsdotter. Her father was one of the wealthiest landholders of the country, and, like her mother, distinguished by deep piety. St Ingrid, whose death had occurred about twenty years before Bridget's birth, was a near relative of the family.
Birger's daughter received a careful religious training, and from her seventh year showed signs of extraordinary religious impressions and illuminations. She owed her unswerving strength of will which later distinguished her to her education, and particularly to the influence of an aunt who took the place of Bridget's mother after the latter's death (c. 1315). In 1316, at the age of thirteen, she was united in marriage to Ulf Gudmarsson, who was then eighteen. She acquired great influence over her noble and pious husband, and the happy marriage was blessed with eight children, among them St Catherine of Sweden.
The saintly life and the great charity of Bridget soon made her name known far and wide. Early in the forties (1341-43) in company with her husband she made a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostella. On the return journey her husband was stricken with an illness and he died (1344) in the Cistercian monastery of Alvastrâ in East Gothland. Bridget now devoted herself entirely to practices of religion and asceticism, and to religious undertakings. The visions which she believed herself to have had from her early childhood now became more frequent and definite. She believed that Christ Himself appeared to her, and she wrote down the revelations she then received, which were in great repute during the Middle Ages.
St Bridget now founded a new religious congregation, the Brigittines, or Order of St Saviour, whose chief monastery, at Vadstena. She journeyed to Rome in 1349, and remained there until her death, except while absent on pilgrimages, among them one to the Holy Land in 1373. In August, 1370, Pope Urban V confirmed the Rule of her congregation. Bridget made earnest representations to Pope Urban, urging the removal of the Holy See from Avignon back to Rome. She accomplished the greatest good in Rome, however, by her pious and charitable life, and her earnest admonitions to others to adopt a better life. The year following her death her remains were conveyed to the monastery at Vadstena. She was canonised on the 7 October, 1391, by Pope Boniface IX.

MAKING GOOD USE OF THE SACRAMENT OF PENANCE

Prepare to encounter Jesus in this sacrament by making an honest and heartfelt examination of conscience.

Examination of Conscience

Recall your sins. Calmly and honestly ask yourself what you have done with full knowledge and full consent against God and the Church's commandments.
Acts of Contrition
O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of Heaven, and the pains of Hell; but most of all because I love Thee, my God, Who art all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen.

I am truly sorry for every sin, mortal and venial, for all the sins of my childhood up to the present hour. I know my sins have wounded your loving Heart, O my Saviour, let me be freed from the bonds of evil through the most bitter Passion of My Redeemer. Amen. O My Jesus, forget and forgive what I have been. Amen. Lord Jesus, have mercy on me a sinner and give me the grace to live for You alone. Amen.

Act of Consecration to the Sacred Heart

O Sacred Heart of Jesus, to Thee I consecrate and offer up my person and my life, my actions, trials, and sufferings, that my entire being may henceforth only be employed in loving, honouring and glorifying Thee. This is my irrevocable will, to belong entirely to Thee, and to do all for Thy love, renouncing with my whole heart all that can displease Thee.
I take Thee, O Sacred Heart, for the sole object of my love, the protection of my life, the pledge of my salvation, the remedy of my frailty and inconstancy, the reparation for all the defects of my life, and my secure refuge at the hour of my death. Be Thou, O Most Merciful Heart, my justification before God Thy Father, and screen me from His anger which I have so justly merited. I fear all from my own weakness and malice, but placing my entire confidence in Thee, O Heart of Love, I hope all from Thine infinite Goodness. Annihilate in me all that can displease or resist Thee. Imprint Thy pure love so deeply in my heart that I may never forget Thee or be separated from Thee.
I beseech Thee, through Thine infinite Goodness, grant that my name be engraved upon Thy Heart, for in this I place all my happiness and all my glory, to live and to die as one of Thy devoted servants.
Amen
