Believe it or believe it not there used to be nine cinemas in this town. Now only three remain, but if you consider the number of films being shown daily at the Warner's multiplex, the ABC and The Arts then we've still got a very impressive deal.
The Cambridge Cinema Experience
The Arts Cinema, Market Passage
The Arts, right in the city centre is an entirely different experience. Funded by Cambridge City Council, Eastern Arts, South Cambs District Council, Cambs City Council, BFI, and more recently Europa Cinemas, the Arts has an artistic policy that completely sets it apart from its' competitors. Whereas Warners and ABC are dominated by American and UK films, the Arts, due to its involvement with Europa Cinemas has a commitment to showing 50% European films. The last two years have been the most successful in the Arts 50 year existence to become one of the most successful single screen cinemas in Europe.
The Arts is the venue for the more dedicated cinema enthusiast.
"I knew nothing about film when I came to Cambridge. The Arts Cinema is where I discovered world cinema," said Sir Ian McKellern. It's certainly not the place for popcorn and snogging in the back row, but it is a much more intimate experience. With comfortable seating for 270, The Arts cinema attracts a different kind of audience not necessarily interested in the latest Blockbusters, but having said that cult films like 'Trainspotting' and 'Shine' have hit the Arts first before moving onto the bigger screen. Every couple of months the Arts Cinema produces an excellent brochure with a comprehensive guide to what's coming up. You can pick these up in the passage way.
Previews and special events are well worth looking out for. More recently the Premier of 'Trainspotting' attended by the director Danny Boyle, plus Ian McKellern attending 'Richard III' and Catrin Kartlidge attending 'Breaking the Waves'
