Believe it or believe it not there used to be nine cinemas in this town. Now only three remain, but if you consider the number of films being shown daily at the Warner's multiplex, the ABC and The Arts then we've still got a very impressive deal.
The Cambridge Cinema Experience
The Warner Village, Grafton Centre
The Warner Village which only opened in April 1995 is part of the massive and extremely impressive Grafton Centre redevelopment. With 8 screens and room for over 2,000 people at any one time Warners is absolutely huge and in a different league to the ABC and the Arts. In the first year alone it gained an attendance of over 1 million people. Now that's probably more like 200,000 people going 5 times, but that is an awesome statistic none the less, and just shows how popular going to the cinema has become again.
Being part of the Grafton Centre means that Warners has all the surrounding benefits, like being within yards of the Grafton Centre multi-storey car park. It is flanked by restaurants and cafes such as the 'Mamma Amalfi' Italian restaurant, 'Burger King' and 'Chillis' mexican restaurant and at the foot of the escalators is the shopping mall. The ABC and Arts don't exactly do badly either really being so close to Lion Yard car park and all the city centre restaurants and shops, but at Warners everything is so much more accessible and what is also important is it's newness. This is a definite attraction for a young audience interested in the latest and greatest.
At Warners the cinema experience is complete. On entering you are greeted by a string of refreshment stalls: a huge Pick N Mix shop, the snacks bar and the Haagen Dazs ice cream bar. It's all fairly pricey, but it's amazing how many people do buy. Watching the auditorium fill up I reckon 90% of the customers came in with ice-cream, nachos, drinks and mostly pocorn. You buy popcorn in £3.50 buckets which seems a bit extreme, but doesn't seem to stop anybody. The whole night might be costing them well over a tenner, but you spend twenty down the pub. That puts things into greater perspective.
Seating is comfortable too, and cup holders in the arms is great idea for those of us accustomed to kicking over our Pepsis at our feet during an exciting part.
