Spirit and Culture Programme
at St Edward King and Martyr, Cambridge
Autumn 2000

The Spirit and Culture programme at St Edward's seeks to foster a spiritual
culture for the new millennium. We are committed to Christ and celebrate
the glory of the Christian tradition, but we are open to the Spirit of God
everywhere, not only in the Church but outside it, including other
spiritual practices, and new movements in science, psychology and ecology.
We are aware that the Church has often alienated those it seeks to serve,
and hope that this programme will embrace spiritual seekers of all kinds in
an atmosphere of warmth and openness.

St Edward's stands at the corner of Market Hill next to the Arts Theatre
(see map on the back). It is an oasis of calm at the heart of Cambridge,
and seeks to combine respect for tradition with relevance to modern life.

The Spirit at Work

Thursdays November 2nd & 9th
7.30 - 9.30 pm

Too often people experience work as something alienating, and feel it
divorces them from spirit. These two talks will help you to find an
approach to work as something joyful and fulfilling that can enhance your
spiritual life.

November 2nd Nick Williams

Doing the Thing We Were Born To Do

This is an interactive evening to discover the work life that would be most
genuinely fulfilling for  you. Nick Williams, former director of the
Alternatives Centre in London, is a famous consultant on helping people to
find fulfilling work lives. This is a rare opportunity to hear his
practical inspiration in Cambridge.

November 9th Simon McKibbian

Managing Your Vision

Simon McKibbian is a management consultant with a decade of experience as a
teacher of meditation, and of ethics, vision and 'right livelihood' in the
work place. His disarmingly warm, interactive style takes you through a
series of fun exercises to help you find better focus, vision and
efficiency in your own life, whether at work, at home, or simply in making
your life choices.

Spirit and Art

Gently experiential sessions that explore how  spirit reaches us through
painting. We will explore how we meet and receive art works, and come to
know the spiritual side of ourselves better.

Following the Feather
- with Vivian Naylor

Saturday October 7th 2.00 - 5.00 pm

Viv has had varied experience in Chaplaincy, therapeutic massage, painting
and much else, and is currently working at Addenbrookes. In these
afternoons she will present some of her paintings in which she has explored
the spiritual through art as she has struggled to make sense of life.  The
'feather' is a metaphor for that which draws us on and enlivens us through
thick and thin. Her paintings explore what the feather might be and what it
means to follow it. We hope that this session will help you to follow your
own feather.

Meeting Your Personal Muse
- with Marella Buckley

Saturday October 14th 10.00 am  - 1.00 pm

A treasure trail in the Fitzwilliam Museum to meet the angelic or spiritual
presences that can lie behind art works. You will be guided by Marella, who
was closely involved in the Cambridge Centre. Marella is a certified
teacher of William Bloom's work, and brings Williams' warm approach to our
meetings with the art world. The session will begin in St Edward's, and
then move across to the Fitzwilliam, where Saturday morning is usually a
very quite time.

Science and Spirit

Thursdays October 19th & 26th

7.30 - 9.30 pm

Science often assumes that there is no spiritual world, and re-integrating
science and spirit is one of the greatest challenges for those who believe
in a spiritual approach. These two evenings, in rather different ways, will
help you to bring them together.

October 19th Nick Thomas

Spirit and Negative Space

Nick Thomas has been inspired by Rudolf Steiner's approach to the spiritual
world, and for many years has been General Secretary of the Anthoposophical
Society. In this talk he explores Steiner's realisation that in higher
states of consciousness a different kind of space is experienced that is
the polar opposite of our usual one.

October 26th Nancy Abrams

Prayers for an Expanding Universe

Songs about Abraham, Faust, the Archbishop of Lubin,
and the cosmic microwave background radiation

Nancy Abrams, married to the famous Berkeley Cosmologist Joel Primack, has
reflected on the spiritual significance of modern cosmologies in word and
song. Her warm approach conveys a uniquely personal meditation on
cosmology. In this evening she will sing some of her songs and explain the
ideas behind them.

Perspectives on Christ

Public lectures Wednesdays at 5.30pm

Christ has been approached, portrayed and revered in a multitude of ways.
This series of talks will explore some of the richness of contemporary
perspectives on Christ in order to understand better his significance for
our time.

The talks will last for about 45 minutes each, followed by a 5 minute
spiritual act of prayer and reverence. Then, for those who wish, there will
be group discussion until 6.45 pm. Open to all.  Donations welcome.

October  4  Christ and Consciousness

Fraser Watts
(Starbridge Lecturer in Theology and Natural Science)

The study of consciousness is central to modern science. Fraser will
explore how key thinkers of the twentieth century have seen Christ as
influencing the evolution of human consciousness.

October 11 Christ and the Imagination

Malcolm Guite
(Chaplain, Anglia Polytechnic University)

Poetry is one of the vehicles through which the human imagination explores
the deeper side of reality. Malcolm will look at how the incarnation of
Christ has been handled in modern poetry.

October 18  Christ in the Visual Arts
 
Graham Howes
(Fellow of Trinity Hall)

Some of the greatest Western art has attempted to portray Christ. Graham
will explore the diverse ways in which Christ has been depicted in the
twentieth century visual arts.
October  25   Christ and Women

Zoe Bennett-Moore
(Senior Lecturer, Anglia Polytechnic University)

For too long, views of Christ have come mainly from men. Zoe will explore
how, in recent decades, our view of Christ has been enriched by the
distinctive viewpoints of women.

November  1       An Indian View of Christ

Martin Forward
(Academic Dean, Wesley House)

Christians steeped in the meditative religious traditions of India have
developed their own distinctive view of Christ. Martin will examine how the
Indian approach enriches the traditional viewpoints of the West.

November 8     Christ in the Cinema

John McDade, SJ
(Principal, Heythrop College, London)

The development of the cinema has brought completely  new  opportunities
for the  portrayal of Christ. Fr. McDade will focus particularly on Martin
Scorese's 'The Last Temptation of Christ'.

November 15   Christ and Liberation

 John Parr
(Canon of Bury St Edmund's Cathedral)

The developing world, often gripped by poverty and oppression, has heard
the message of Christ with fresh ears. John will explore what we can learn
from their vision of Christ as a liberator.

November 22     A Muslim View of Christ

Tim Winter
(Lecturer in Islamic Studies, Faculty of Divinity)

Christians are often unaware of how Christ has been revered in the Islamic
world. Tim will convey something of what Christ has meant to Muslims.

Meditative Eucharists
Sundays at 5.00 pm
Starting September 24th

This important new series of services will bring together meditation and
the sacrament of Holy Communion. Silence, incense, and a rich mixture of
traditional and modern words and music (including chants) will be used to
move and lift the heart in contemplative worship.

Guided Meditation
Fridays 5.30 - 6.15 pm

An introduction to Christian mindfulness for those who wish to explore the
spirit in silence. It can help you in your own spiritual practice to
meditate in the company of others and we invite you to come and join us. A
new series of meditations will begin in October. No charge.

'Beyond the Fringe'
22 October, 5 November, 19 November

A series of Sunday afternoon meetings, led by Fraser Watts and others, to
explore questions of sexual orientation and identity in an open Christian
framework. Followe by refreshments and a meditative service
