Fri 15 Apr.: Khyrkhaas - CONCERT. Music from the Mountain-Steppes of Khakassia, 8pm
This is the first concert in the UK tour of Khyrkhaas - from Khakassia, a land of shamans and ancient burial mounds that lies within the golden Sayan-Altain mountain ring in southern Siberia. Master musician Sergei Charkov and his daughter, Julia, come together as Khyrkhaas to perform traditional music and their own compositions that evoke their unique landscape and culture. Sergei performs with overtone and undertone-singing (khai) styles, including the gravelly tones used in epics to accompany the souls of the dead to the after-world. He makes and plays all Khyrkhaas' instruments - 12-string chatkhan zither, 2-string yykh fiddle, 2-string khomus lute, syylas pipe and shaman dungur drum. Julia is the first female Khakas musician to dare to challenge the formerly male preserve of khai performance. Her hard edged voice complements her equally superb musicianship and dance.

As preserved in it's undiluted form through his dynastic tradition
The 19th century sage Lahiri Mahasaya (see photo) is revered throughout India as one of the greatest householder saints. His life and teachings became known to the West through the book, Autobiography of a Yogi, by Parahmahansa Yogananda. Shibendu Lahiri, great grandson of Lahiri Mahasaya and the current representative of his dynastic tradition, will introduce the techniques of the original Kriya Yoga as taught to Lahiri Mahasaya and his master, Babaji. No modifications to the techniques and teachings have been permitted in this Rishi tradition, so those receiving instruction can be sure that they are obtaining an authentic and potent spiritual transmission. Shibendu will also offer advanced instruction to initiates.
Shibendu invites seekers to share the insight that flowers, generation after generation, in the Lahiri dynasty through the Kriya process. Like his ancestors, Shibendu Lahiri is also a householder with a family and past career. Kriya Yoga is intended to offer householders a deeply spiritual path that is practicable while remaining engaged in normal life.
This is a rare opportunity to learn directly from a master of the original Kriya Yoga. Shibendu speaks excellent English and is a powerful and engaging communicator whose words have the force of direct spiritual experience.

Description: Learn to play fun, accessible and uplifting rhythms from West Africa. No previous experience necessary; this workshop is open to all.
The emphasis will be very much hands-on with instruction on the basic technique of the djembe drum followed by learning and playing of tranditional multi-part rhythms. Drumming can help relieve stress, improve concentration and even boost your immune system. The workshop is led by Osadha, who has been drumming for over nineteen years and has trained in drum circle facilitation. He has also studied African drumming in the Gambia with Master Drummer Moussa Sila. £10/£8

After the bomb attacks in London, the Cambridge Inter-Faith Group (www.cam.net.uk/home/interfaith) invites all people of faith to a symbolic solidarity visit to the Cambridge Mosque this Saturday for the short noon prayer at 1:15pm.
We feel sympathy with the vast majority of the Muslim community, when their religion gets abused by a tiny minority and is publicly connected with terrorism. How would you feel if your faith were repeatedly named and shamed for terrorist attacks?
In times of crisis, all people of faith are challenged not to follow the path of hate and war, but rather practise compassion, love and understanding.
Please remove your shoes and wash yourself if you can before entering the prayer room of the Mosque (washrooms are inside) - ladies should cover their head.

Description: Learn to play fun, accessible and uplifting rhythms from West Africa. No previous experience necessary; this workshop is open to all.
The emphasis will be very much hands-on with instruction on the basic technique of the djembe drum followed by learning and playing of tranditional multi-part rhythms. Drumming can help relieve stress, improve concentration and even boost your immune system. The workshop is led by Osadha, who has been drumming for over nineteen years and has trained in drum circle facilitation. Today we will commemorate Frère Roger Schutz, 90 years old Protestant monk, who foundet the international, ecumenical Taizé community (France) in 1940 - he was killed during the evening prayer on Tuesday 16 August. He was one of Europe's leasding religious figures.
In the midst of about 2500 people attending the ceremony in the Church of Reconciliation, a woman - probably mentally disturbed - struck Brother Roger violently with knife blows. He died a few moments later.
His mission was to reconcile Christian divisions.
In its sorrow, the Taizé Community thanks all those who are supporting it by their affection and their prayer.

It is just an 'ordinary' i.e. non-alternative sort of bash (I decided to try it when a friend asked if
anyone knew some place where the over 40s/50s can go to have a bop without
feeling ridiculous). It's a "no frills" affair - cash bar (closes
11pm) with a few nibbles as I'm having to hire the venue & sound system,
and the emphasis is, obviously, on dancing (general/freestyle/no style).
Feel free to bring along any friends, especially those keen on dancing.
The bar closes 11pm.
I'd like to get a rough idea of numbers so PLEASE LET ME KNOW if you
are planning on coming and how many.
The venue is smoke free, people who can't survive without a puff will have to
go outside. Free entry on this occasion - donations for Kashmir Earthquake are welcome. Hope you can make it!

Sun 16th Oct: Inter-Faith visit to the mosque to share the fast breaking, 6:00pm
After our successful last visit to the mosque, the Cambridge Inter-Faith Group (www.cam.net.uk/home/interfaith) invites invites again to visit the mosque and make personal contacts with the muslim community - this time for the Ramadan fast breaking.
We'll meet at 6pm in the mosque, the ladies should have a head cover and should join the muslim sisters upstairs in the beginning. After eating a date and a short prayer we are invited to join the fast breaking meal in the mosque and mix with the Cambridge Muslim community.

Wed 26 Oct: Who is a Hindu?? Discussion, 7 pm
Hinduism today and its traditional stories, teachings and rituals affect the lives of around 800 million people around the world in so many different ways. It perhaps challenges our notions of what a 'religion' actually is. Can it be described as just one religion? Are there any particular teachings or practices which unite all Hindus?
This is a unique opportunity to explore these questions and find out more about what being a Hindu really means.

Tonight some film students from Sussex want to make a recording of our singing and use it as background sound for a short film about me and my life. PLEASE do come and support me with your voice! Ralph
[4th Wednesday each month] The human voice as the most perfect instrument provides the possibility to connect with our soul and with God. This is why in many faith traditions the use of the voice plays an essential part. It resonates with the chakra system, activates the flow of subtle energies, upliftis the mood, balances mind and aura and can lead to a state of blissful joy. The deeper breathing activates and rejuvenates the body.
Chanting chooses sacred phrases or mantras from various traditions. They are sung repeatedly for minutes or hours and can create a strong feeling of community and connectedness.
Chanting can lead to mystic experiences beyond understanding. It helps to bring body mind and soul into balance and is very beneficial in our mind dominated society, especially for intellectuals.
We will be sharing heart centred chants from various traditions, some simple, some with harmonies (like Taizé).
Please bring a drink and an open heart, candles or other items for the center of our circle.

From Monday 17th October the weekly bin collection will be replaced by a fourtnightly cycle:
your dark grey household bin + the black recycling box will be emptied one week
the green compost bin + the new blue box for plastic bottles will be collected every other week.
the weekday of collection will be changed
Please help your elderly, blind or illiterate neighbours with this change.
Advanced recycling: you CAN add any other plastic material in the blue box, but it needs to have the blue recycling triangle with the numbers 1,2 or 3 (or 01,02, 03) on it.

Fri 28 Oct '05: Dances of Universal Peace - an inter-faith experience, 7:45 for 8pm
The Cambridge Inter-Faith Group (www.cam.net.uk/home/interfaith) invites for an evening with the Dances of Universal Peace, which honour different religious and spiritual traditions. Simple sacred phrases from various traditions chanted repeatedly, involving the whole body, is sometimes called "body prayer". The peace dances offer an approach to and an experience of religion in an unconventional way. Singing and dancing in a circle also symbolises community and connectedness.
The dances, words and melodies are very simple and easy to learn - if you can walk and talk - that's all you need to bring. Tonight Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism & Islam will be honoured with a dance.

Zafar Khan, Chair of the Luton Council of Faiths and David Jonathan (Johny), Faiths Worker have consented to come as guest speakers. They bring with them their experiences to share with us, from their journey so far, of walking and working with people from different relgious, racial and cultural backgrounds. They have had both, experiences of working informally as a loose group called Interfaith Forum in Luton and later on experiences of working formally with a structure like Luton Council of Faiths.

The Civic Celebration aims to bring members of different faith groups together

The retiring warden of Hartington Grove Quaker Meeting, Michael Snelgrove, invites as every year to a traditional Scottish folk dance evening, Ceilidh (speak: "Kaylee"), with caller, Scottish music and people creating front couples, right and left corners, back couples, rows, changing positions all the time until total confusion; hopefully you arrive at the same place where you started.... nevertheless - or because of htis?: it's great fun and all steps will be taught before.

In this workshop the idea is to explore what Barry and Felicity have to
offer together, drawing on their respective experience and skills. It
is a creative exploration for both of them as this is a new endeavour.
The idea is to explore the world of Colour, Light and Sound in a
profound but light and playful manner. Working with mandalas is
generally speaking a meditative process so there will be periods of
relative quiet as well as the more dynamic vocal times. The workshop is
intended to be a flow which moves in and out of various dimensions and
media. You are invited to join in the flow and make your unique
contribution!
