The second semi-final between Simon Freytag (nearside) and Matthias Hammer. Despite Simon's best efforts at cheating by putting himself half a length ahead at the start (see above), changing lanes mid-race, extending the course and assigning himself the best equipment, he went down heroically. The final between Gillian Wallace (farside) and Matthias Hammer. Hammer still slightly in the lead here, but it was all to no avail as Gillian powered through him to become only the second woman ever to win the sculls. Race report.
