This is a KCBC coxless four in practice for the CU Light Fours of Michaelmas 1951. They were defeated in the first round by the eventual winners, but according to Jeremy Debenham (rowing at 3), "nevertheless we thought it was one of the faster crews on the river. Certainly the most enjoyable boat I've rowed in. A remarkable tour de force by freshman Drum Matthews (bow) - steering though new to the Cam".

The crew were D. Matthews (bow), G.T. Marshall, J. Debenham, A. Cadbury (str). Adrian Cadbury & George Marshall went on to win Blues, with Cadbury rowing in the 1952 Olympics and Marshall becoming the 1952/53 CUBC President.

The photo was presented to KCBC by Jeremy Debenham in 1997.
