Stretham Old Engine
Stretham Old Engine is one of a number of relics from the Steam age that are dotted around the fens. What has always impressed me about it is it's massive size. It's appeal is partly romantic in that it takes the mind back to what we loosely imagine to be a less complicated and frustrating age, but I think the main process at work is that its size makes me feel comparatively small, and evokes poignant memories of being a small child in a grown-up sized world. |
