A Bereavement

It is with great and sincere regret, that I have to tell of the passing of one of the great characters from one of our pubs. Decker Lewin was the pub dog at the Empress in Thoday Street Cambridge for 16 years and his passing has upset all the regulars. Dave and June picked him up from the animal shelter when their children were small, and he settled into pub life like a duck taking to water.

The tales of Decker are legendary, such as the fact that the only person he ever bit was the local Labour councillor, and the time when he was young he became disorientated and instead of jumping out of the kitchen window and on to the flat roof, he was in the front bedroom and the regulars were amazed to see a flying dog hurtling past the window. As he approached middle age, like many of the regulars he put on weight, but in the final years of his life he slimmed down. There was a famous occasion when his cataracts were causing a problem: laser treatment was possible, if expensive, but Dave informed us that he could wear glasses like everyone else!

Dave and his daughter Victoria were with him at the end, and his ashes have been saved (costing Dave £160.00). `Uncle' Paddy, June's brother, was his favourite and he would make a beeline for the door to see him when he sensed Paddy's arrival.

Decker, you were a great friend, R.I.P

Jerry Brown
